Yesterday, the Layton Fire and Layton Police Departments responded to a residential structure fire in the area of Hill Villa and Main Street. The incident was a reminder of the courage, professionalism, and dedication displayed by our Fire Department every day.

Upon arrival, fire personnel faced multiple challenges: an active residential fire, reports of an animal stuck inside, and a downed, live power line threatening multiple residents and a nearby restaurant. Despite dangerous conditions, firefighters entered the burning home and located the dog, who was unresponsive and not breathing. Through their quick action, training, and determination, they successfully revived the dog and transported it to a nearby Emergency Veterinary clinic.

Incidents like this highlight the selfless commitment our firefighters make to protect lives - both human and animal - while putting themselves in harm's way.

On behalf of the Police Department, we want to extend our sincere appreciation and recognition to the Layton Fire Department for their outstanding work, teamwork, and dedication to serving our community. Thank you for all you do!

This year marks the 40-year anniversary of the unsolved homicide of Carla Maxwell, who was killed while working at a Layton convenience store during the early morning hours of April 25, 1986. As we continue to investigate this case, we are asking our community to help. Even the smallest detail - something that may have seemed unimportant years ago - could provide investigators with the information needed to move this case forward. If you have any information related to the death of Carla Maxwell, please contact the Layton Police Department.

Layton Police Officers are on scene at Layton High School as a precaution after the school received a threat. The school is currently secured, classes are occurring as normal, and all students are safe. Right now no one is allowed to come in or out of the school out of an abundance. We don’t anticipate a delayed release from school but will keep the community updated should that occur.

The Layton City Council has approved a new ordinance prohibiting cryptocurrency ATMs (also known as Bitcoin kiosks) after nearly $2 million in fraud losses in our city in the last four years. These scams often involve criminals pressuring victims to deposit cash into a kiosk, like the one shown in the photo, despite our warning flyers posted at all 18 kiosks in the city. This ordinance DOES NOT BAN cryptocurrency, only the kiosks linked to fraud to help prevent further victimization.

🚨 Crypto Scam Warning – Quick Tips 🚨
If someone contacts you by phone, text, or email and asks you to send money or cryptocurrency, stop and think.
✔ Police and courts will never ask for payment over the phone or by cryptocurrency.
✔ Banks will never tell you to withdraw cash and send it through a crypto ATM.
✔ No legitimate company will ask for crypto to fix a computer virus.
✔ If someone you only know online asks for crypto, it’s a scam.
✔ Pressure, urgency, or secrecy are major red flags.
❗ Never send money or cryptocurrency to someone you don’t personally know.
If something feels wrong, pause and verify before sending money.
