Today we honor Hubert H. Humphrey, who was born on this day exactly 115 years ago. Hubert Humphrey enjoyed an illustrious career as a statesman and champion of civil and human rights, serving as mayor of Minneapolis, U.S. Senator, and U.S. Vice President under Lyndon B. Johnson. Many people who held different political beliefs considered him a friend, and he worked on behalf of people from all walks of life: the young, the aged, the poor, laborers, farmers, people of color, and people from other countries. After Humphrey’s death in 1978, President Jimmy Carter announced the creation of the The Hubert H Humphrey Fellowship Program to honor Humphrey’s exemplary leadership, his tireless devotion to public service, and his sincere hope for greater understanding among nations. continue to embody this same commitment to leadership that is so aptly described in Humphrey’s own words:
“Leadership in today’s world requires far more than a large stock of gunboats and a hard fist at the conference table”.
“Freedom is hammered out on the anvil of discussion, dissent, and debate.”
“This, then, is the test we must set for ourselves; not to march alone but to march in such a way that others will wish to join us.”
