The last election I vied for an available East Jordan City Commission seat and fell to second position to our newly appointed Commissioner. A Commissioners seat has been vacated and a qualified candidate will be appointed and I have asked to be considered. I hope that my experiences will allow me to represent the hospitality industry.

When N**i tanks rolled into Czechoslovakia in 1938, one man rode out to meet them. He was 68 years old, wearing full medieval armor, and carried a halberd. The Germans had no idea what to do.
Josef Menčík lived like it was 1438, not 1938.
Born in 1870 in a small Czech village, Josef grew up obsessed with history—particularly the age of knights, castles, and chivalry. While the world around him embraced electricity, automobiles, and modern conveniences, Josef rejected it all.
In 1911, when he was 41 years old, Josef bought Dobrš Fortress—a crumbling 14th-century castle that had been gutted by fire. Most people would have demolished it. Josef decided to restore it and live there like a medieval knight.
No electricity. No running water. Just candles, torches, and a commitment to living as his ancestors had 500 years earlier.
He filled the castle with medieval artifacts—suits of armor from Germany, weapons from France, tapestries, and curiosities. He dressed in full armor and rode his horse through the countryside, teaching local schoolchildren about Czech history and the ideals of chivalry.
The locals called him "Fousatý táta" (Bearded Father) or "Poslední rytíř" (The Last Knight). Children loved him. He opened his castle for tours, dressing his wife Ema and their children in period costumes, turning history into a living experience.
People thought he was eccentric, but harmless. A kind old man playing dress-up in his castle.
And then 1938 arrived.
Adolf Hi**er had already annexed Austria. Now he wanted Czechoslovakia—specifically the Sudetenland, a region with many ethnic Germans. Britain and France, desperate to avoid another world war, signed the Munich Agreement, essentially handing Czechoslovakia to Hi**er without a fight.
The Czechs felt betrayed. Abandoned by the world. And on October 1, 1938, German tanks began rolling across the border at Bučina.
No one fired a shot. No army mobilized. The invasion was unopposed.
Except for one man.
As the German armored column rumbled down the road—tanks, trucks, hundreds of soldiers—they encountered something none of them could have possibly anticipated:
A man on horseback. Wearing full medieval plate armor. Holding a massive halberd (a medieval pole weapon with an axe blade).
Josef Menčík, 68 years old, had ridden out alone to face the N**i war machine.
The German column stopped.
Soldiers stared in complete confusion. Tank commanders radioed back: "There's... a knight. In armor. Blocking the road."
Josef sat tall on his horse, halberd raised, ready to defend his homeland the only way he knew how—like a knight from the Middle Ages.
For a moment, time seemed to stop. Medieval past met mechanized present. One elderly man versus an army.
The Germans didn't know what to do. Some sources say they tapped their helmets, signaling they thought he was insane. Others say they simply didn't want to kill a crazy old man in a costume.
After a brief, surreal standoff, the tanks rolled past him. Josef was pushed aside. His gesture—however symbolic—couldn't stop an invasion.
But he had done it anyway.
He had stood up when his government wouldn't. When Britain and France abandoned his country. When the world looked away. Josef Menčík, an old man who lived in the past, was the only person who showed up to defend Czechoslovakia's future.
The story spread quickly. People called him a modern Don Quixote—a delusional dreamer tilting at tanks instead of windmills. But others saw something different: a man who understood that some stands must be made, even when they're hopeless.
His castle was never occupied by German forces. Some historians believe the N**is, amused or perhaps touched by his bizarre courage, left him alone. Others think the castle simply had no strategic value.
Josef continued living his medieval life throughout the war, teaching children, maintaining his fortress, embodying values from a lost era.
When World War II ended in 1945, the N**is were gone—but the Communists took over. The new government nationalized Josef's beloved castle, seizing it for the state.
Two days later, Josef Menčík died at his son's home. He was 75 years old.
Some say he died of a broken heart. Others say it was simply his time. But the timing tells its own story: the man who had devoted his entire adult life to preserving history couldn't survive having that history taken from him.
Today, Dobrš Castle still stands. Tourists visit. Historians study. And people still tell the story of the Last Knight—the eccentric old man who rode out in medieval armor to face N**i tanks because he believed honor still mattered.
He couldn't stop the invasion. But he proved that courage doesn't require victory—sometimes it just requires showing up when no one else will.

PLEASSE TAKE THE TIME TO READ IF YOUR AN EAST JORDAN RESIDENT

11/04/2025

POLLS OPEN SOON, LET YOUR CHOICE BE KNOWN!! I ask you to consider me as a write-in for one of the EAST JORDAN CITY COMMISSION seats. I said that I was going to seek this position as I said I would, as I am not a liar. At that time, the representation of business owners and residents who reside on Main Street was not represented. No representation from anyone in the lodging, restaurants, and I am currently the only establishment serving alcoholic beverages for onsite consumption. Considerations are needed for the hospitality industry an,d I feel with 25 years @ the Jordan Inn have valuable insight.
My unique employment history and education are also assets in the decision-making process of our community. Deputized with the Washtenaw Sheriff's Dept in 1987, Bexar County Corrections Officer 1991-94, and certified Peace Officer have some working knowledge in law enforcement. Construction experiences also could be considered an asset, completing many major projects to supervising complete renovation in large nursing homes and the construction USA's southernmost federal courthouse. in Brownsville Texas. Comfortable reading blueprints, schedule of values, codes, permits, inspections, literally every aspect of construction projects, large and small.
to further expound, education makes me a solid choice. Attending Northern Michigan University 1986-1988 and graduating from the University of Northern Iowa 19in 91. A degree in the human services (BA Social Work) and double minors in Psychology and Sociology with studies in Urban Growth and Development also contribute to my assets in a commissioner position as well as my master's studies in the Political Science department in public Administration @ Southwest Texas University.
I am not trying to "win" this position but offering my expertise and knowledge to assist in guiding us in this upcoming series of development and growth that appears inevitable; We all win with the right person!! BEST REGARDS TO THE OTHER CANIDATES SEEKING THESE THREE POSITIONS

I sent this to a friend in response to a post. A friend that i hold dear in my heart as a person and his actions. We are on different "sides of the aisle" and was concerned that this might cause a riff between us but choose to post to be true to myself.

Russell i had a very different experience in Ann Arbor 9/10 JUST BECAUSE OF MY APPEARANCE,I said nothing, attended a coffee house type performance at the ARC where my treatment was .....unusual but my unwitting self figured it was my size. This happens often, in fact last week attended Ted Nugggent and following day Five Finger DP with a security detail quickly assigned and in tow. Im dressed in my usual Hawaiian with black hat after a four hour 🏍 ride. Constantly reminded of the house rules, although I did not break one and immeadeatly agreeable to what I was told. I used the restroom and momentarily panicked as I noticed a basket of tampons and pads on the sink, a quick glance in the mirror elevated my concerns as I viewed urinals in the mirror. Thinking this was a mistake by management dismissed this until later veiwed several genetic females use this labeled clearly "mens" room. Then escorting my companion to her vehicle extended friendly greetings to no reply, even distest. Returning to my motorcycle this expeirence was aspirated by receiving the same response 15 MORE TIMES. The only nice word I received was giving a panhandrler $10 who quickly dismissed me as he was focused on other patrons of the ONLY business downtown still open at 1015. When i had asked him if he had a safe place he informed me that he raises enough($71) to stay in a cheap hotel nightly. So probably expecting 100 per night to continue instead of applying this to make his situation better.....the entitlement of strangers picking up his tab nightly. The next morning I was told to pack my things and leave the hotel because I questioned a policy. I was told I was speaking disrespectfully, and after management review of video received an apology.
I tell this to you Not for Not because although we have some differing veiws, I hold huge amounts of respect for you and John and even your veiws.

I to am an American. My families migrated here as well. ONE SIDE ON THE MAYFLOWER THE OTHER SEEKING ASYLUM AS THEY WERE JEWISH GERMANS. My greatgrandfather billed as the strongest living man(Harry Blondell pre 1900) forced to perform under a stage name because of our ancestry. I understand the plight of ALL AMERICANS, current and inspiring but dont deserve consideration? Respect is not given but earned....but shouldn't disrespect should be earned as well? We ALL NEED TO DO BETTER, but that's what makes this country great, we have the ability to make that choice!! I hope this does not distance those friends that feel otherwise but this is OUR America. I will continue to be optimistic and have love and respect for all WORLD PEACE STARTS WITH NATIONAL PEACE!
