Hagaman Memorial Library will be closed today, Friday, June 19th, in honor of the federal Juneteenth holiday; we'll return for our regular business hours tomorrow, Saturday, June 20th from 10am - 5pm.

For those unfamiliar with this holiday, Juneteenth, officially Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday in the United States, now celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the end of enslavement in the United States. On this day in 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that the state's enslaved African Americans were free.

This event occurred more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued and effectively marked the abolition of slavery in the United States. The tradition of celebrating freedom on this day began in Texas the following year in 1866; in 2021, the United States officially recognized June 19th as Juneteenth National Independence Day, making it an annual federal holiday.

Another day, another What to Read Wednesday! We've had a busy day hosting the CT State Library and some of our library-world contemporaries, but we always have time for our readers: What are you looking forward to reading this weekend? Let us know! We're closed for Juneteenth on Friday, but there's still plenty of time to come on down and support your favorite local library πŸ’™πŸ“šπŸ’›

Congratulations to Director Mallory! We are incredibly proud of you and of our team for this well-deserved honor from the Connecticut State Library during 2026's Excellence in Public Libraries Award. Community Engagement is what we love to do, and we couldn't do it without all of you. This is a win for Hagaman Memorial Library and a win for East Haven as a whole! πŸ’›πŸ“šπŸ’™

This afternoon, Director Mallory and Hagaman Memorial Library were honored both to host the Excellence in Public Libraries Award Ceremony but to also receive the 2026 Community Engagement Award for our efforts in the community whilst closed following water and electrical damage. We are so happy to have our library revived and better than ever with Director Mallory at the helm! Many thanks to and to our fellow libraries honored today: for Advancement in Literacy and Education; for Accessibility and Inclusion; and for Outstanding Children's Services!

We’re celebrating the start of this year’s summer reading challenge with a very special program at the Hagaman Library: A visit from a real-life paleontologist!πŸ¦•πŸ¦•πŸ¦•

On Tuesday, June 30th from 2-3:30pm in our DeMayo Room, dinosaur enthusiasts of all ages are welcome to join us for a program about prehistoric life, and the fossils that help us explore the mysteries of the past, presented by local paleontologist Danielle Hill!

There will be opportunities to ask Danielle about her work on paleontology dig sites, dinosaur-themed crafts and activities to enjoy, and perhaps even a few fossils on hand for curious minds to examine!πŸ¦–πŸ¦–πŸ¦–

This program is free to attend, but space is limited; please email our Youth Services Librarian Caitlin Riccitelli at [email protected] if you have questions and to RSVP!
