Join Miss Caitlin this morning, Tuesday, September 8th from 10:30 - 11:30am in our Community Room: babies, toddlers, and their families/caregivers are invited back to our regularly-schedules Toddler Tuesdays!

Kids can enjoy music, movement, and more during this week's Toddler Tuesday program! Toddler Tuesdays features thirty minutes of music-making through singing, dancing, and instruments, followed by a half hour of parachute games and tasty, toddler-friendly snacks 🧃 No RSVP needed!

On Wednesday, September 9th, we're also excited to welcome you to a BRAND NEW program for children from birth to 5 years old not yet enrolled in school: A weekly play-group, brought to you by the EH Family Resource Center! The EHFRC Play-Group is an opportunity for children and caregivers alike to connect, play, and learn together, all with no RSVP needed!

Whether you're a butcher, a baker, a candle-stick maker, or a pencil-pusher, the hard-working folks of Hagaman Library wish you a Happy Labor Day! We're closed today. but we'll see you again tomorrow at 10am for all of your library needs.

Some history behind the holiday: Labor Day has its roots in the American labor movement of the late 19th century, when workers were fighting for better wages, safer workplaces, and shorter hours. In September 1882, thousands of workers marched through New York City in what is considered the first Labor Day celebration. The tradition spread across the country, and on June 28, 1894, President Grover Cleveland signed legislation making Labor Day a federal holiday.

At Hagaman Library, we recognize the importance of preserving and sharing the stories of the people who built our communities. From factory workers and farmers to teachers, tradespeople, small business owners, and public servants, the history of work is also the history of our communities.

The work continues; today, that can mean learning a new skill, preparing for a career, or taking the next step toward a new opportunity. That's why Hagaman Library offers free study guides and test-preparation resources to help our community members prepare for exams, certifications, and career goals. Whatever you're working toward, we'll always be here, and working hard, to help!

Friends and readers, summer is beginning to loosen its grip, we're settling into September, and the first hints of fall are everywhere! With the Fall Festival coming up this weekend and Hagaman Library returning to Saturday hours beginning on the 19th, we have plenty to look forward to. Please note that we will be closed tomorrow, September 7th, in observance of Labor Day, but we nevertheless continue to offer fun, free, and engaging activities for readers of all ages; it’s always hard to choose, but Notable Events This Week Include:

🍂 Our first Chair Yoga class on Tuesday morning with instructor Michele Antisdel;

🍂 60th Anniversary of Star Trek-themed All- Ages History and Trivia Night on Tuesday evening; and

🍂 For teens, bring your favorite book and your creative sparkle for our Teen Services Department's B.Y.O. Book Bedazzling Craft Night on Thursday evening!

Plus, don't miss out on our next Bingo Fundraiser on Friday, October 2 at the East Haven Senior Center on 91 Taylor Avenue, sponsored by the Friends of Hagaman Memorial Library! Doors open at 5:30pm, the games begin at 6:30pm, and it will be $15 at the door, which will cover the cost of the bingo sheets. All proceeds will go to the benefit of Hagaman Memorial Library!

We are deeply grateful to the anonymous patron who made a donation to our Youth Services Department in memory of Dolly Parton, with the wish that it be used to purchase new books for our young readers.

There may be no better way to honor Dolly’s memory than to put as many books as possible into the hands of as many children as possible. That is something Dolly herself devoted much of her life to, among her many other good works, through her beloved Imagination Library, sharing the gift of books with children and inspiring a lifelong love of reading.

To our anonymous donor, thank you for this beautiful and meaningful gift; we can’t think of a better tribute to Dolly’s legacy. Every time one of these books is opened, a child gets the chance to discover a new world, meet new characters, ask new questions, and let their imagination take flight.

We hope to welcome readers of all ages to Hagaman Memorial Library today before Labor Day weekend; we'll be here today, ready to assist you, anytime between 10am - 5pm.

Thank you to Paul Garneau and Linda Garneau of the East Haven Historical Society; Deborah Balisciano of the East Haven Rotary Club; Gregory Austin of the Rainbow Elders and Friends of Southern CT; Marianne Hall of the Bradford Manor Hose Co. #4 Auxiliary; and Angelica Festa of East Haven Historical Society who joined us tonight at Hagaman Memorial Library for another installment of Non-Profit Fundraising 101 with Ken Engelman (center)! Great things happen when people come together to help their communities!

Ken Engelman, author of "The Local Nonprofit," is a longtime community volunteer, nonprofit advocate, and marketing professional who believes meaningful change doesn't require massive budgets, just creativity, consistency, and genuine human connection.

Tonight’s workshop gave local nonprofit leaders, volunteers, and community members practical ideas for telling their stories, attracting supporters, recruiting volunteers, building relationships, and creating sustainable growth. And this is just the beginning!

Non-Profit Fundraising 101 with Ken Engelman is becoming a regular series at Hagaman Memorial Library, with our next meetings scheduled for November 12, 2026 at 6pm in our Community Room and January 20, 2027 at 6pm back in our DeMayo Room. Each session will offer practical ideas, real-world examples, and an opportunity to connect with others who are working to make a difference in our community.
