Victory Over Japan Day (VJ Day) - August 14, 1945

Every important moment in the history of our United States is made even more monumental this year – 250 years of so many historic events that have molded and shaped the values and ideals our country upholds. All of World War II is part of our story – both the European and Pacific fronts. Today we celebrate the 81st anniversary of the day Japan surrendered, marking the end of WWII (the formal surrender was signed on September 2,1945 which took place on the USS Missouri).

We lose more WWII veterans every year and there are so few of them left to honor, to hear their stories and to keep their experiences alive and passed on to the next generations. Let us never forget these heroes and the horrific, global war of destruction and atrocities that still remains such a devastation of the human spirit.

The future generations must learn this history and understand how, why and what took place so that our beautiful planet Earth will never again experience the evil that infected our world.

Today, let us rejoice this day in our history where there was great news that brought such joy and gladness to the hearts of all Americans and peace, be it ever so fragile, to our world!

HAPPY JULY 4TH – HAPPY BIRTHDAY 250TH, AMERICA!

There will be a lot said and an outpouring of patriotism as our Country celebrates this historic milestone - parades, picnics, fireworks - ceremonies far and wide. I choose a brief historical perspective as we look back on our 250 years as a nation.

We all have our own unique history of generations of family that has helped to make this so special. Many of us have relatives that have fought for our freedom in the wars that have shaped our Nation and defended its principles on which it was founded. So many have fought and died protecting those beliefs. This is a day to honor those who made that ultimate sacrifice.

Many of us have families who fled chaos, famine and inhumane treatment seeking a better life in America. The Statue of Liberty stands today as a symbol of those hopes and dreams of so many as they came through Ellis Island. Today those hopes and dreams are alive and well with stories still to be written.

Whatever your story, we are a nation – a “melting pot” that unites us all in those founding values – “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.”

God bless America, land that I love

From the mountains to the prairies

Sunday, June 14, 2026 – HAPPY NATIONAL FLAG DAY

On Sunday, fly our beautiful flag proudly and gratefully as we continue to honor 250 years of our Nation’s history. A little historical perspective below to understand its symbolism:

“It commemorates the adoption of the flag on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress as the official flag of the United States of America. ‘The Flag Resolution stated that the flag of the thirteen United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.’ “

To The USS Ellet (DD-398) Friends and Family

June 6, 1944 – D-DAY

Every important date in our Nation’s history seems to be even more significant and compelling as we approach the 250th celebration of our Country’s birth on July 4th.

D-Day (also known as Operation Overlord) is a crucial date to be recognized and remembered as the turning point in World War II marking the beginning of the Allies successful campaign to release Western Europe from the control of the N***s. It was the largest seaborne invasion in history. Countless lives were lost as the Allies came ashore on 5 beaches in Normandy, France to fight the evil that had threatened the very soul of humanity.

The men who died that day are all heroes who made that supreme sacrifice. Many of them are buried in a cemetery in Normandy devoted to those champions of freedom. Taking some time to remember so many brave men today is a way of paying homage to all who served, are serving and will serve our beautiful United States of America!

MEMORIAL DAY
MAY 25, 2026

As we approach Memorial Day 2026, the 250th year of our nation’s birth, we celebrate our country, our history and the men and women that, through two and a half centuries, who have given so much, made incredible sacrifices and fought bravely and without hesitation for our freedom, ideals and democratic values.

However you choose to celebrate this important holiday - whether you take a little time to thank a veteran, say a prayer for those you have made the ultimate sacrifice, visit a cemetery for a memorial service, attend a parade and/or proudly fly our flag - do one or do many, but remember to give thanks for the bounty which we have received because of the people who made it happen. Be forever grateful!

December 7, 2025 – NATIONAL PEARL HARBOR REMEMBRANCE DAY

To the USS Ellet (DD398) Family and Friends

A day, 84 years ago, I hope will never be forgotten! As President Roosevelt so famously said, “a date which will live in infamy”.

I remember growing up with my dad, Robert Irwin (who served aboard the Ellet on that fateful day), who was always reminding my brother and me of the importance of December 7, 1941 in our Nation’s history.

As a child, I half-heartedly listened to my dad’s “war stories” and begrudgingly watched “Victory at Sea” to keep him company. But it was not until my dad died and I became a senior citizen that I fully realized what he had tried to impart to us. I wish I had been able to enjoy this newfound understanding while he was alive, but, as the saying goes,” better late than never”.

So here I am honoring his memory by helping to administer this page dedicated to those who served with dignity and courage for our beloved country. I tell my little story with added pride that my parents gave me Ellet as my middle name!

Take time today to remember all who served – those who perished and those who survived. Our United States of America stands strong because of them!

VETERANS DAY – NOVEMBER 11, 2025

To the USS Ellet (DD398) Family and Friends

This year, as always, let us take some time out of our day to honor and remember the military veterans of our United States Armed Forces. As a quick fact, this date, November 11th, coincides with the anniversary of the end of World War I, which was known as Armistice Day until 1954. At the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11 month in 1918, World War I ended but unfortunately war in our world has not ceased.

This month Ken Burns presents his newest documentary (on PBS beginning on November 16th) – a six-part series on the American Revolution. A wonderful, historical tribute to what became our country’s very first veterans who fought long and hard for their dreams of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”.

To all veterans, past and present, we honor you today and salute your bravery, commitment to the values our country holds dear and your service to our glorious and remarkable United States of America!
