September means back to school—and genealogists are always learning! 📚

What is one genealogy skill you would like to get better at this fall?

Finding records? Reading old handwriting? DNA? Newspaper research? Organizing what you've already found? Breaking through that stubborn brick wall?

Tell us in the comments. You may discover that other CSG members are working on the very same thing!

Women who lived before 1850 can be especially difficult to identify. They may appear in records only under a husband’s name, and documents may provide few clues about their parents.

Join Marian Pierre-Louis on Saturday, September 19, at 1:00 p.m. for “Solving Pre-1850 Identity Mysteries: The Case of Martha Brown Chandler.”

Although Martha had ten children, much of her life and parentage remained hidden. This case study follows her from Pomfret, Connecticut, to Hanover, New Hampshire, and explores how careful research can separate evidence from incorrect family-tree information.

The program is free and will be held on Zoom, https://csginc.org/event/zoom-finding-martha-brown-chandler-with-marian-pierre-louis/

Before railroads connected Connecticut and New York, travelers relied on roads, turnpikes, stagecoaches, and waterways.

In “Criss-Crossing Connecticut and New York: Migrations by Stage Coach,” Pamela Vittorio will explore the transportation routes that carried people through Connecticut, New York, and the rest of New England.

Learn how Indigenous trails developed into Post Roads and turnpikes, how stagecoach routes connected with major harbors, and how Erie Canal landings opened new paths for westward migration.

Understanding how people traveled can help genealogists answer an important question: Why did an ancestor leave one community and settle in another?

Hear Pamela Vittorio at CSG’s Family History Day Seminar on Saturday, October 3, in Wallingford. Visit the seminar page on the CSG website to learn more and register. https://csginc.org/event/in-person-2026-family-history-day-seminar/
