History of the East Haddam Fire Department:
October 6, 1930 - Town appointed a “Firefighting Apparatus Com
mittee”
March 10, 1931 - A town meeting approved the expenditure of $12,000 to purchase firefighting equipment
March 30, 1931 - The East Haddam Volunteer Fire Department was formed
April 15, 1931 - An organizational meeting was held with election of officers and a roster of firefighters selected
April 1931 - Brownell & Co. donated land for construction of a 2 bay fire station
July 30, 1931 - The first equipment arrived - a 1931 Buffalo class “A” pumper with a 500 GPM pump (still owned by the department) and a 1931 Chevrolet with a 200 GPM pump
1946 - A 1946 Maxim with 750 GPM pump and 500 gallons of water was purchased and housed at the old state garage in East Haddam
1951 - A new Chevrolet chassis was purchased - The EHVFD removed the body, hose bed, reel, and pump from the 1931 Chevrolet and installed them on the new chassis
1957 - Ted Hilton donated a boat, motor, and trailer to the EHVFD
1960 - A 1960 Howe with a 750 GPM pump and 800 gallons of water was purchased.
1961 - Shaw Lake Vol. Fire Department (Lake Hayward) joined with the EHVFD and the Lake Hayward Company 3 was formed - with them came a 1937 American LaFrance with a 500 GPM pump
1961- The East Haddam Lions Club donated a Chevrolet van to the EHVFD for use as an emergency vehicle
1961 - A third bay was added to the Moodus Firehouse by Brownell’s
1967 - A 1967 Maynard with 1,000 gallons of water was purchased and housed at the Old state garage in East Haddam
1973 - The town approved building a new fire station (Co # 1) on Town Street on land donated by Alan and Noel Davis
1973 - A 1973 1 ton GMC pickup was purchased, equipped, and donated to the town by members of the EHVFD
1973 - A new International pumper with 1,000 GPM pump and 750 gallons of water was purchased and replaced the 1946 Maxim at Company 3 in Lake Hayward
1974 -The new Town Street firehouse was constructed and dedicated - It housed the Maynard, Maxim, and Buffalo pumpers, emergency vehicle, and boat.
1974 - The East Haddam Rotary Club donated a 1974 Chevrolet step van to replace the 1961 Chevrolet van
1975 - The EHVFD welcomed the addition of junior members
1977 - The hurst tool/extrication device was purchased through donations from the East Haddam Lions Club, towns people, and The State of Connecticut
1978 - A Pierce/International with 1,000 GPM pump and 750 gallons of water was purchased
1979 - A Pierce/Dodge mini pumper attack truck was purchased complete with cascade system
1980 - A Pierce/International 1,500 gallon tanker/pumper with a 750 GPM pump was purchased
1981 - The EHVFD celebrated it 50th anniversary with a dinner/dance, open house, and a parade with festivities following
1983 - The EHVFD welcomed the addition of the ladies auxiliary
1984 - The EHVFD acquired a 1953 Dodge military surplus vehicle and provided all the labor and materials to turn this vehicle into a Brush truck
1986 - A Seagrave (still owned by the department) with a 2,000 GPM pump and 1,000 gallons of water was purchased and replaced the 1960 Howe
1989 - With overcrowding again an issue the town approved, constructed, and dedicated the Company 2 firehouse on W.F. Palmer Road
1989 - An 8 foot Zodiac boat motor and trailer was purchased
1991 - The EHVFD purchased and donated to the town an 18 foot Zodiac boat, motor, and trailer to be used for water rescues and emergencies
1993 - A Excellance/Ford rescue truck was purchased for an emergency vehicle and replaced the 1974 step van.
1995 - A Four Guys/Peterbilt 2,500 gallon tanker (still in service / Tanker 1-15) with a 500 GPM pump was purchased
1997 - A Four Guys/Spartan pumper (still in service / Engine 2-15 ) with a 2,000 GPM and 750 gallons of water purchased and replaced the 1973 pumper which was donated to a town in Maine
1997 - A cascade compressor (to fill firefighters air bottles) was purchased by the ladies auxiliary and EHVFD which was then donated to the town
1998 - A new 8 foot Zodiac boat (still in service / Marine 2-15) was purchased and the old motor and trailer retained
2003 - A Ferrara/Spartan pumper (still in service/Engine 4-15) with a 2,000 GPM pump and 1,000 gallons of water was purchased and replaced the 1980 pumper which was donated to Monroe, MA FD
2004 - The EHVFD received a used 14 foot Jon boat (still in service/Marine 3-15), motor, and trailer from the High School
2005 - The EHVFD applied for and received a grant from Homeland Security in the amount of $263,000 for the purchase of radios, air packs, and gear
2005 - The town of East Haddam hired one full time firefighter and one full time firefighter/EMT to better serve the town during weekday daytime hours
2005 - A new Ford F-550 can and chassis (still in service/Engine 6-15) was purchased. The body off the 1979 Dodge mini pumper was refurbished and a new pump and tank was installed with 250 gallons of water
2006 - The EHVFD applied for and received a grant from Homeland Security in the amount of $53,153 for the purchase of a compressor, air packs, and gear
2006 - A new Ford F-350 pickup (still
In service/Utility 15) was purchased to replace the 1973 pickup
2006 - A new Ford F-350 flatbed (still in service/Brush 15) was purchased to replace the 1953 Dodge brush truck - The EHVFD provided all the labor to mount the tank, pump, and equipment
2006 - The EHVFD celebrated its 75th anniversary complete with parade and festivities
2008 - A 1977 Maxim 85 foot ladder was donated to the department by the Essex Fire Department
- An ATV (still in service/Ranger 15) was purchased through donations from the townspeople as well as donated trailer from Consumer Reports
- Dispatch was switched from disbanded KX to Valley Shore Communications

2014 - A Ford F550 Rescue truck (still in service/Rescue 1-15) was purchased replacing the 1993 rescue truck
2015 - A 2004 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor was donated by the town and served as a duty officer vehicle. All repaint, electronics, and warning lights install was done in house.
2016 - The 1995 Peterbilt tanker was refurbished complete with new tank, pump components, repaint, and electrical work
2016 - A 2016 Peterbilt/Four Guys Tanker (still
In service/Tanker 2-15) was purchased with a 500 GPM pump and 2,000 gallons of water
2016 - A building refurbishment and expansion committee was formed to
Complete an additional two added bays to Company 2 along with interior upgrades to Company 1 and 2.
2018 - An 18 Foot Robalo center console boat (still in service/Marine 1-15) was purchased to replace the 18 foot Zodiac. The new Marine unit was complete with Radar, GPS, chart plotter, and multiple communication devices.
2020 - A Federal grant was awarded to the town for the purchase of a new Quint ladder truck to replace the 1977 Maxim.
