Across our nation today, flags will wave, families will gather, and communities will come together.

Many will enjoy a day off from work. Many will attend parades, cookouts, and celebrations.

But before the day slips away, we ask that everyone remember why this holiday exists.

Memorial Day is not about the start of summer.

It is not about backyard barbecues, beaches, or an extra day off.

It is about sacrifice.

It is about the young soldier who never returned home. The sailor lost at sea. The airman who gave their life in the defense of freedom. The Marine whose family received a knock at the door that forever changed their lives.

It is about the empty seats at family tables, the folded flags displayed in living rooms, and the Gold Star families who continue to carry the weight of loss long after the final salute has been rendered.

The freedoms we enjoy today were purchased at an extraordinary cost by men and women who believed something greater than themselves was worth defending.

As public servants, we understand the meaning of service, duty, and sacrifice. Yet today, we pause to recognize those whose sacrifice exceeded all others.

At 3:00 PM, during the National Moment of Remembrance, we encourage everyone to stop for just one minute. Reflect on those who gave their lives in service to our nation. Say their names. Remember their stories. Honor their legacy.

Because while generations may pass, the debt we owe them can never be repaid.

Today, and every day, the Rensselaer County Bureau of Public Safety honors and remembers America's fallen heroes.

We will never forget.

National EMS Week: Honoring Those Who Answer the Call

As this week comes to a close, we proudly join communities across the nation in recognizing National EMS Week, a time dedicated to honoring the extraordinary Emergency Medical Services professionals who stand ready to help others at a moment’s notice.

Every day, and at every hour of the day or night, the EMS providers serving Rensselaer County answer the call. Whether responding to life-threatening emergencies, comforting a patient during one of the worst moments of their life, delivering critical care on the way to the hospital, or supporting our communities at public events and emergencies, their commitment never wavers.

Rensselaer County is fortunate to be served by a dedicated network of career and volunteer EMTs, Advanced EMTs, Paramedics, supervisors, dispatchers, educators, and support personnel. Together, they provide compassionate, professional, and lifesaving care to our residents and visitors every single day.

The work of EMS often happens behind the scenes and rarely receives the recognition it deserves. This week provides an opportunity to pause and acknowledge the skill, sacrifice, and dedication required to serve in this profession. EMS providers miss holidays, family gatherings, birthdays, and countless hours of sleep so that help is available whenever and wherever it is needed.

To all of the EMS agencies and providers throughout Rensselaer County: Thank you. Thank you for your professionalism, your compassion, your countless hours of training, and your unwavering commitment to protecting the health and safety of our communities.

Please join us in thanking the EMS professionals who serve our county not only this week, but every day of the year.

This week, May 3rd–9th, we recognize and honor the dedicated men and women serving as Correction Officers during National Correctional Officers & Employees Week.

Every day, correction officers work in challenging and often unpredictable environments to maintain the safety, security, and order of our correctional facilities. Their role extends far beyond locked doors and secured walls — they are professionals who demonstrate vigilance, integrity, compassion, and resilience while serving their communities.

The work performed inside our correctional institutions is an essential component of public safety. Correction officers face risks and challenges that often go unseen, all while ensuring the safety of staff, inmates, visitors, and the public. Their commitment, professionalism, and sacrifice deserve recognition not only this week, but every day.

The Rensselaer County Bureau of Public Safety proudly thanks all Correction Officers and correctional employees for their service, dedication, and unwavering commitment to keeping our communities safe.

Please join us in recognizing and appreciating these public safety professionals throughout National Correctional Officers & Employees Week. 🇺🇸👮‍♂️👮‍♀️

Today, we proudly recognize and celebrate the incredible nurses serving throughout Rensselaer County and across our nation in honor of National Nurses Day.

From emergency rooms and ambulances to nursing homes, clinics, schools, dispatch centers, rehabilitation facilities, and patient homes — nurses are often the calm in the chaos. They are the reassuring voice during emergencies, the advocate for patients and families, and the dedicated professionals who continue to show compassion during some of life’s most difficult moments.

In public safety, we work side-by-side with nurses every single day. Whether it’s during a major incident, routine EMS call, disaster response, or long-term patient care, their knowledge, professionalism, and unwavering commitment make an immeasurable difference in our communities.

Today, we extend our sincere appreciation to every nurse who answers the call to care for others — often putting the needs of complete strangers ahead of their own. Your dedication does not go unnoticed.

To all nurses: thank you for your service, sacrifice, compassion, and commitment to keeping our communities healthy and safe.

Today we recognize a group that doesn’t always get the spotlight in public safety—but absolutely should.

It’s National Teacher Appreciation Day, and here at the Rensselaer County Bureau of Public Safety, we want to say thank you to the educators who help build safer, stronger communities every single day.

Teachers are often the first to identify when something isn’t right. They help shape decision-making, reinforce responsibility, and instill the kind of awareness that carries over into real-world safety—whether it’s understanding emergency procedures, practicing fire drills, recognizing hazards, or simply looking out for one another.

They are partners in prevention.

Across our county, we’ve had the privilege of working alongside schools during fire prevention programs, emergency preparedness drills, and community outreach events. Time and time again, we see firsthand the dedication, patience, and professionalism educators bring to their classrooms—and to the safety of their students.

To every teacher, administrator, and school staff member:
Thank you for what you do, both inside and outside the classroom. Your impact goes far beyond education—you help prepare the next generation to be informed, aware, and resilient.

From all of us at the Rensselaer County Bureau of Public Safety—Happy Teacher Appreciation Day. 🍎🚒📚
