In 1909, Margaret Askee opened the first lending library in East Grand Rapids, Michigan out of the large home she shared with her husband, William Askee. A beloved citizen and retired school teacher, Margaret Askee desired to share her vast collection of books in a way that would benefit the community. It soon became apparent that a more permanent structure with a working staff would be needed. In

1915, William Askee provided funds from his most successful business venture to build the Askee Public Library which remained operational until it was destroyed in a fire in 1971. Ironically, the Askee Public Library then took up residence in the old East Grand Rapids Fire Station, which had recently been vacated, due to space constraints. The library building has since been remodeled several times, winning multiple awards for innovation.
