FAQ Friday: I bought a car from Marketplace and will be making payments to the owner. How do I get it registered in my name? A: The previous owner needs to provide you the title so you can transfer ownership. We can list private lenders as lienholder. We need their name, address, and date of birth. Once processed you will receive the title and the lender will receive a lien card which they would sign and give to you once the car is paid off. Then you can submit them both to get a clear title.

FAQ Friday: I want my friend to inherit my car. Is that possible? A: Yes. One way is to add that person to the title now as TOD which means transferable on death. There is a form to complete and title fees to get a new title. With that, they only have rights once you are deceased and would easily transfer the title with proof of death, sales tax free.

FAQ Friday: I live in ND, but I just bought a car with a MN title. Do I have to come to your office to transfer it? A: No. You register and transfer title in the state where you are going to house the vehicle. It will be changed to a ND title when issued to you if you register it there.

FAQ Friday: Since July 4th is on a Saturday, will you be open Friday? A: No, as the 3rd is a U.S recognized federal holiday, we will be closed. Please, if you haven't already, renew your boat NOW before that weekend or risk being an unhappy camper!🚣‍♀️⛵️

FAQ Friday: Did my boat registration cost increase this year? A: Yes. The Aquatic Invasive Species surcharge changed from a flat $10.60 to being based on the length and type of boat starting with the 2026 registrations. FAQ Friday: I live in Grand Forks. Can I renew my car tabs/DL at your office? A: No, we can only do MN licenses. Once you cross the river you are in MN. Yes, Google has us first in their search list but you must go to the correct state.
