In honor of all the first day of school posts, we wanted to share one of our own. Firefighter Gates begins his first day of paramedic school today. Having just been promoted to full-time back in July, FF Gates has already made a lasting impression and proven himself to be an asset to the department. We wish him all the best in his schooling, and can’t wait to see all the great things he will do for this department and community!

Our thoughts and prayers are with our brothers and sisters to the South, as well as their families through this difficult time

Thursday August 15, 2024

It is with great sadness that I must report the line of duty death of New Bedford Firefighter Matthew E. Forand. Preliminary information suggests that Matt suffered a medical emergency and passed away during the night while on duty at Fire Station 9.

On behalf of the New Bedford Fire Department and all our members, I want to express our most heartfelt condolences to Matt’s family and loved ones, especially his two children. I also want to pledge the Department’s support for them in a time of sadness. This is an unspeakable loss for them, for his brother and sister firefighters, and for our community.

Matt, 45 years old, completed the New Bedford Firefighting Academy in 2006. He was most recently assigned to Engine Co. 9 and was recognized repeatedly for his commitment to the residents of New Bedford. He received the Medal of Valor at the 2014 Firefighter of the Year Awards for rescuing an unconscious occupant from the second floor of a burning building on Dartmouth Street. He also received a Unit Citation as a member of Engine Co. 6 for his efforts battling the Royal Crown Apartment fire in March 2023.

Information on the services will be announced when it becomes available. We ask that you respect the family’s privacy at this time.

Respectfully,

Scott Kruger
Fire Chief

Today is a special day at the FFD! Two of our members share a birthday today and we wanted to take a moment and point on some “similarities”.
- Deputy Chief Lafleur is one of our most senior members and FFOP Lamy is our most junior member.
- DC Lafleur is turning 62 and FFOP Lamy is 26.
- FFOP Lamy is now required to carry his own health insurance and DC Lafleur is now eligible for several “senior” discounts.
Both of these gentlemen are on duty today so if you see them out and about be sure to say hello and wish them a happy birthday!

Department members spent the weekend in Maryland, attending the National Fallen Firefighter memorial service. Unfortunately due to the poor weather, services had to be moved to a different location and the public was unable to access the National Fire Academy campus. Despite the weather and location change, the service was still exceptional and something that made our members proud to be part of. This year, former Freetown firefighter John R Laronda was honored as his name was added to the memorial after losing his life in 2017. We were honored to be in attendance for this event, and among so many great families. May those who lost someone find the support of the fire service that they need, and may those who lost their lives continue to rest in peace.
