This week, we followed the emergency response process from the moment a 911 call is answered to the point where East Dundee Fire District crews are dispatched and responding.

But what happens next?

📍 Command & Coordination
Larger incidents may require an organized command structure to coordinate crews, apparatus, communications, and safety.

🤝 Automatic Aid & Mutual Aid
Neighboring departments may respond alongside East Dundee when additional personnel, apparatus, or specialized resources are needed.

🔥 Emergency Operations
Depending on the incident, crews may perform fire suppression, EMS, rescue, extrication, hazardous materials response, water rescue, or technical rescue.

🚨 Why so many emergency vehicles?
Different units carry different equipment and personnel, and multiple tasks may need to happen at the same time.

🔎 The call continues after the emergency is controlled
Crews may still need to complete investigation, cleanup, equipment replacement, documentation, and other tasks before returning to service.

Every call is different, but the goal is the same:

Get the right people, equipment, and resources to the emergency as quickly and safely as possible.

🇺🇸 SEPTEMBER 11 — 25 YEARS LATER 🇺🇸

Today, the East Dundee & Countryside Fire Protection District joins communities across the nation in remembering the lives lost on September 11, 2001.

Twenty-five years later, we continue to honor the civilians, firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, military members, and countless others whose lives were forever changed that day.

For the fire service, September 11 carries a special weight. We remember the 343 members of the FDNY who made the ultimate sacrifice while responding to the World Trade Center, along with all first responders who ran toward danger in service to others.

We also remember the courage shown in the days, months, and years that followed — by responders, families, survivors, and communities who carried forward with strength and resolve.

As we mark the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we pause to reflect on sacrifice, service, unity, and the responsibility to never forget.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

🔥 EDFD 2026: KNOW YOUR FIRE DISTRICT — WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU CALL 911? 🔥

When someone calls 911, the emergency response begins before a fire engine or ambulance ever leaves the station.

This week, we’re taking a closer look at the steps that happen between your 911 call and the arrival of emergency crews.

📞 1. Your 911 call is answered
⏱️ Target time: within 15 seconds

Depending on where you are located within the East Dundee Fire District, your 911 call may initially be answered by Kane County, Cook County, or QuadCom.

The call-taker confirms your location and gathers basic info about the emergency. Once confirmed it's within the East Dundee Fire District, the call is transferred to QuadCom, the primary dispatch center that coordinates the Fire District response.

📡 2. The emergency call is processed
⏱️ Target time: about 60 seconds

QuadCom gathers the information needed to classify the emergency and determine which Fire District resources should be sent.

🚨 3. Fire District personnel are alerted

Based on the type and location of the emergency, the appropriate East Dundee Fire District personnel and apparatus are dispatched.

👨‍🚒 4. Crews prepare and leave the station
⏱️ Target turnout time:
60 seconds for EMS calls;
80 seconds for fire and special-operations calls

This is the time between firefighters being notified of the call and the responding unit beginning to travel toward the emergency.

🚒 5. The appropriate units respond

Depending on the emergency, the response may include a fire engine, ambulance, command vehicle, specialized rescue equipment, or multiple units.

Every emergency is different, and the response is built around the type and severity of the incident.

These times are national performance targets, not guarantees that every call will follow the exact same timeline. Call transfers, location verification, the type of emergency, traffic, weather, and other active incidents can all affect the overall response.

Mental health struggles can affect anyone — firefighters, paramedics, veterans, first responders, families, friends, coworkers, and neighbors.

In the fire service, asking for help can sometimes be difficult. But reaching out is a sign that support is needed, and support is available.

If you or someone you know is struggling, please remember:

• You do not have to go through it alone
• Check in on the people around you
• Listen without judgment
• Encourage professional help when needed

🔥 EDFD 2026: KNOW YOUR FIRE DISTRICT — HOW IS YOUR FIRE DISTRICT FUNDED? 🔥

Most people know the Fire District responds when there is an emergency. But how are those services actually funded?

The East Dundee & Countryside Fire Protection District is an independent unit of local government. Its funding supports the personnel, equipment, apparatus, facilities, training, and other resources needed to provide emergency services to the community.

A simple way to think about it is:

Property Taxes + Other Revenue → Fire District Budget → Emergency Services

Fire District revenue can come from several sources, including:

• Property taxes
• Ambulance and service-related fees
• Grants and other outside funding opportunities
• Other legally authorized revenue sources

But not all Fire District expenses are the same.

💰 OPERATING EXPENSES are the recurring costs of providing services every day, such as personnel, training, supplies, utilities, equipment maintenance, and other routine operational needs.

🚒 CAPITAL EXPENSES are generally larger, longer-term investments such as apparatus, major equipment, facilities, and significant repairs or improvements.

📋 DEBT PAYMENTS are another part of the financial picture and may involve obligations from previous major purchases or projects.

🔒 Some revenues may also be restricted for specific purposes, which means they cannot simply be moved from one use to another.

That distinction is important.

Money intended for a major capital project does not automatically solve an ongoing operating expense, just as recurring operating revenue may not be enough to fund a major apparatus or facility purchase.

Understanding these differences helps explain why the District is presenting two separate funding questions in 2026, each intended to address different types of needs.

🔥 EDFD 2026: KNOW YOUR FIRE DISTRICT — WHO GOVERNS YOUR FIRE DISTRICT? 🔥

The East Dundee & Countryside Fire Protection District is governed by a three-member Board of Trustees.

The Board is responsible for providing oversight of the Fire District, including major policy decisions, finances, long-term planning, and accountability to the public.

Your current Board of Trustees is:

• Board President — Trustee Doug Hoyt

• Secretary — Trustee John Bonkoski

• Treasurer — Trustee Mark Guth

The Board works with Fire District leadership to help guide the organization, review budgets and expenditures, plan for future needs, and ensure the District continues to operate responsibly.

It’s also important to understand the difference between governance and day-to-day operations.

The Board of Trustees provides oversight and policy direction, while the Fire Chief and District staff manage the daily operations of the Fire District, including emergency response, staffing, training, fire prevention, equipment, and other services.
