The Society of New Concord

The Society of New Concord We recognize, continue and promote the community of the Hamlet of New Concord.

The Society of New Concord was founded by local families in the Winter of 1982-83 as a way to recognize, continue and promote the community of the Hamlet of New Concord. It was conceived by its initiators as a symbolic bridge to join the New Concord of yesteryear with the New Concord of today. From its earliest days, the Society has had a historical perspective; and those historical underpinnings

have continued to inform its activities and projects. The Society strives to be a promoter of local historical preservation; it was also meant to promote or preserve a sense of community in the small locality, and to foster social interaction and enjoyment.

Red Rock Historical Society Presents:
Saving the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse: A Conversation with the Restoration Chair
Saturday, June 28, 2025 at 4 pm at the RRHS building
459 County Route 24, East Chatham NY
Please join us to hear about The Preservation of the Hudson - Athens Lighthouse as told by our guest speaker, Van Calhoun, the chair of the Preservation Committee.
Built in 1874, the lighthouse was manned until the 1950’s and was placed on the National Register a few decades later. Now owned by the non-profit Hudson-Athens Lighthouse Preservation Society, the lighthouse is being carefully restored to assure it will last formany more years. The Preservation Society has a website ( https://halps.org ) with more information about the history of this great Lighthouse.
Van Calhoun, chair of the Preservation committee, comes from a family with a long history in our area as his ancestors settled in Colonial America in the 1600’s. His fourth Great-Grandfather was Hosea Birge, a Revolutionary War Soldier. A Chatham High
School graduate, Van was raised on the family farm and after college, he has had a varied career including ownership of the Calhoun Contracting company that built reproductions
of historic homes. He and his wife of 25 years, Dr. Sue Senecah, a retired SUNY ESF professor, are Co-Captains of the tugboat, Betty June.
All are welcome, admission is free and refreshments will be served after the presentation!
