In the Spring, I will be running a 5 week session (1 1/2 hours per week in the evenings) called "Around The Campfire: Folk Music in America." It will cover the pioneers, the Folk Revival, Troubadours, groups, folk-rock and the past 40 years or so to bring you up to date. If you want to get a brief taste of what I have in mind, tune in this Sunday (January 15, 2012) to WRSU at 88.7 FM or on the internet from 9:00AM to 11:00AM. I very much welcome any suggestions.

Whereas the Folk Music Club of East Brunswick usually holds our "pulls" on the 3rd Thursdays of each month, the Library has bumped us for January. The closest date I could get will be:

Date: Tuesday, January 17, 2012

Time: 7:00 PM to 9:30PM

Location: East Brunswick Public Library on Ryders Lane, East Brunswick – be sure to look for the sign outside of one of the meeting rooms in the left rear of the library

VISION

When I started the group over 25 years ago, there were no other groups in the vicinity so I tried to create an atmosphere that caters to as many people as possible. This often led to some lack of direction and a loss of members who often times didn't find what they were looking for.

After a decade lapse, having rekindled the group, I find there are several other groups catering to the "folk" umbrella. Each one has its own flavor.

With that in mind, I wanted to reiterate what my vision is for the group. It will always be informal and without pressures. But I will always encourage people to play what they want. There does not need to be songs for everyone to sing along with. Solos only expand everyone's musical diversity and some people may find they are exposed to a new variation they never thought they would like.

Two rules I would like to put in place.

1. Anyone who brings an instrument must contribute to the entertainment. To alleviate any pressure, if you don't want to play, just offer a song for the group to play either with you or without you. Just "passing" puts pressure on the few who still want to play and I know I don't have an unlimited repertoire - and no one wants to hear the same tunes over and over. I have heard that complaint about other groups.

2. When it is your turn and you want to play something (anything including instrumentals), please let the group know if you want to play solo or would you mind if others accompany you. Frankly, I like it when others add some interesting licks to whatever I am playing - but that is not a suggestion for everyone. I also understand that 15 guitars just playing rhythm may be overwhelming. However some leads, a bass and at times some percussions could add quite a lot to what I alone can provide.

There are no dues, elections, officers, etc. We get together to share the music we love. Although it is under the "folk" umbrella, believe me when I say it is a very large umbrella. Blues, old-timey, bluegrass, ragtime, etc. are all welcome.

Feel free to invite anyone you think would enjoy this.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to call me at (732)257-5035. I welcome your input.

Hope to see you then.

I had the great pleasure to be at two folk concerts this week-end. On Friday night, I saw Bill Staines who I hadn't seen live since 2007. On Saturday, I saw Tom Rush who I haven't seen for more years than I can remember. Interestingly, both artists were born and raised in New Hampshire - and each described the strange feeling to have out-lived an ecological wonder -the Old Man of the Mountain. The granite image that only nature could have crafted became a symbol of the state. Ultimately, the hands of the time pulled down the man. The cause is believed to be a result of freezing and thawing of the past winter combined with heavy spring rains. Nonetheless, time did nothing to lessen the performances of both artists who enchanted the audience with a blend of new and old songs.

Happy Halloween to all. The last few days, I've enjoyed a bunch of music we only hear once a year - with a few new songs thrown in for good measure which relate to Halloween. Always a fun departure.

The Folk Music Club of East Brunswick will be holding their next pull (acoustic jam session) on Thursday November 17 at 7:00 PM at the East Brunswick Public Library located on Ryders Lane in East Brunswick (in the Municipal Complex). All are welcome whether you want to play, sing or just sit back and enjoy. We are getting more people who "Like" the site. I'd like to invite them to try one of our sessions. They're a lot of relaxed fun and good music.
