This week, the New Jersey Motor Truck Association proudly joins the nation in recognizing the 3.6 million professional truck drivers who keep America moving every single day.

Nearly everything we depend on from the food on our tables and medicine in our homes to the fuel, equipment, building materials and countless products that keep our businesses and communities running was delivered by a professional truck driver.

But behind every delivery are miles driven, long days and nights, time away from family, changing weather, traffic, tight schedules, and an unwavering responsibility to safety.

Professional drivers don't simply move freight.

They connect our communities. They support our businesses. They strengthen our economy. And they keep America moving forward.

Here in New Jersey, we are especially proud of the professional men and women who navigate some of the busiest and most challenging roads in the country while safely delivering the freight our state and nation depend upon.

During National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, we encourage everyone to take a moment to recognize the person behind the wheel.

👏 Say thank you.
🚛 Give them room on the road.

And remember the important role they play in our lives every day.

25 YEARS - WE WILL NEVER FORGET

September 11, 2001.

Twenty-five years have passed, yet the significance of that day has never faded.

Today, the New Jersey Motor Truck Association joins our nation in remembering the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honoring the firefighters, police officers, EMTs, first responders, members of our military, and ordinary Americans who demonstrated extraordinary courage in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

For those of us in New Jersey, the memories of that day are especially close. Across the river, our skyline changed forever. Families throughout our state lost loved ones. Communities mourned together. And countless New Jerseyans stepped forward to help in whatever way they could.

A quarter-century has now passed.

Children have grown into adults. A new generation has been born that knows September 11 only through the stories, photographs, and memories we share with them.

That makes our responsibility to remember even more important.

We remember the lives that were taken.
We remember the families who carried an unimaginable loss.
We remember those who ran toward danger to help others.
We remember the courage, sacrifice, service, and unity that followed.

And we make a promise that must endure long after those who witnessed that day firsthand are gone:

We will tell their stories.
We will honor their sacrifice.
We will never forget.

Today, we ask our members, our trucking community, and all New Jerseyans to take a moment to remember those we lost and honor all who served.

CVSA’s Brake Safety Week Is Underway

Yesterday was the first day of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s (CVSA) Brake Safety Week, a weeklong commercial motor vehicle brake-safety inspection and enforcement initiative taking place across Canada, Mexico and the U.S.

Throughout the week, certified commercial motor vehicle inspectors will conduct inspections of commercial motor vehicles, with an emphasis on brake systems and components.

Brake-related violations continue to be one of the leading reasons vehicles are placed out of service during roadside inspections. Brake Safety Week helps identify and remove vehicles with critical brake issues from North America’s roadways while raising awareness about the importance of proper and proactive brake maintenance and repair.

From Aug. 23-29, inspectors will perform comprehensive brake-system inspections, checking for:

Missing, non-functioning, loose, contaminated and/or cracked parts

Non-manufactured holes (e.g., rust holes, holes created by rubbing or friction) and/or broken springs in the spring brake housing

Audible air leaks around brake components and/or lines

Over-stroking service brakes

Worn brake linings and/or pads

Broken or cracked drums or rotors

Inoperative tractor protection systems

Other brake-related defects that could impact a vehicle’s safe operation

Commercial motor vehicles found with brake-related out-of-service violations, as defined by the North American Standard Out-of-Service Criteria, will be restricted from operating until the identified violations have been corrected.

Inspectors will focus on drums and rotors, the emphasis for this year’s brake safety initiative. Brake drums and rotors are important components of a vehicle’s brake system. Issues with drums and/or rotors may affect a vehicle’s brake efficiency. Broken pieces from drums and/or rotors may dislodge during travel and damage other vehicles or result in injuries or fatalities.

Brake Safety Week also serves as an opportunity to educate motor carriers, drivers, mechanics and others responsible for commercial motor vehicle maintenance about the importance of routine brake inspections and preventive maintenance. Properly functioning brakes help drivers maintain control of their vehicles, reduce stopping distances and minimize the risk of crashes.

Brake Safety Week is part of CVSA’s Operation Airbrake Program. The goal of Brake Safety Week is to eliminate roadway crashes by conducting roadside inspections and educating drivers, mechanics, motor carriers, owner-operators and others on the importance of proper brake inspection, maintenance and operation.

The results from this year’s Brake Safety Week will be compiled and released later this year.

The New Jersey Motor Truck Association was honored to attend the Freedom Hauler announcement at the White House.

We applaud the White House, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration for launching this important initiative to expand career opportunities for military veterans in the trucking industry.
