Our sole purpose is to construct, maintain, and oversee a firefighter training facility in East Berne, in the “Heart of the Helderbergs”. The facility will be located on property previously purchased by the Berne Fire District in early 2013 for the purpose of building a future new East Berne Fire Station. The property is large enough to accommodate a fire station as well as a training facility to
benefit all fire and EMS agencies in southern Albany County. The vision began when several Chief Officers of the Berne Fire District had shared their idea of building this much needed training facility for the benefit of all of the hilltown fire companies. They proposed their idea to the Berne Fire District Board of Commissioners in May of 2013 and the Board generously agreed to let them advance their plan. A team of eleven local fire chiefs stepped up to serve on the committee, and the 501c3 not-for-profit entity was formed in mid 2014. The Board of Directors is comprised of seven local volunteer fire chiefs. We also have representatives from the Berne Fire District Board of Commissioners as well as several additional non-voting fire chiefs on our advisory team. Following a stringent regulatory process, we have worked with state, local, and federal regulatory agencies to survey and prepare the property for development. We have received guidance from Lamont Engineers, Matrix Environmental Technologies Inc, Bagdon Environmental, the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, the Berne Planning Board, and the US Army Corp of Engineers to date. Lamont Engineers will be the principal engineers of the project, with civil engineering provided by Albany County, complements of legislator Deborah Busch and Albany County Executive Dan McCoy. We have a professional grant writer on our staff and we have several grant applications in process at this time. It is our hope that with strong political and local support, grant funding will materialize in the very near future. To date, initial funding has been provided by local volunteer fire companies and personal donations. These funds have financed the site regulatory work performed to date. We are now approaching the shovel-ready state of the project and our fundraising will progress in earnest.
