“The more you read, the better prepared you will be to lead.”
— James Mattis

Leaders in the modern military require a strong body and a sharp mind. Some of the greatest leaders I've worked or followed in the military had a list of books that they recommended.

I asked some of the Green Berets of 519th what books they would recommend to read in the modern world, and I want to share them with those interested in the path of self improvement.

I personally need to commit time to read or listen to more books. Hopefully I can inspire myself to do more reading by sharing these titles.

First book:

"Leaders Eat Last", by Simon Sinek.

“Leadership is not about being in charge. Leadership is about taking care of those in your charge.” -Simon Sinek

A former manager of mine gave me a copy of this book when I left the company. This book changed some of my viewpoints of leadership and how I carry myself as a leader.

Simon Sinek delivers some pretty incredible material about the mindset and responsibilities of modern leadership and the art of influencing others. This book dives into several areas of leadership opportunities like culture, microculture and the real world impacts of culture on businesses.

For a modern leader, this methodology is a great way to shift our focus from results and processes to our people, as the single most important resource in our organizations.

Have you read any leadership books by Simon Sinek?

MLC 26-004, dismissed.

The teamwork in this classroom ensured that everyone graduated.

I took a lot of lessons from this class, some about writing, but mostly about people and leadership. There was a tremendous of knowledge, experience, and ability in our class. Each NCO brought their A game to this course, and it showed.

I look forward to sharing my lessons and knowledge with the team back home.

MLC is a beast. If you plan on attending any time in the near future, ensure you are practicing your writing skills.

To the next challenge.

I remember my first award ceremony for Recruiting in 2021. I had just completed SQI4 (Recruiting School) and had fallen short on my enlistment goal for the year, by one. I sat there and watched the winners collecting their accolades and their awards. I had yet to earn my first award. One NCO looked at me and said you will be up there next year.

Fast forward to 2026: I walked away with several awards, including an ARCOM from 519th, an ARCOM from Recruiting, a 14er Award for writing 14 enlistments in the FY, and the Sergeant Majors Leadership Award (the Darth Vader mask).

Some reflections and milestones i have to share in this journey.

This was my second year as NCOIC for the Special Forces Recruiting Section. I had already built the section up to a strong powerhouse of leads and enlistments. I knew we could do more and I was determined to show what it was truly capable of.

I told every person in Recruiting and 519th that would listen to me (and some that wouldn't) about how this was the year.

SF Recruiting was going to rewrite the book.

We did it.

Special Forces Recruiting directly contributed to 26 total enlistments across the State. Potential candidates going straight to the SWTD, 18Xs who chose to rise their right hand for the first time, 11Bs going to Ranger School, SOF enablers, and finally, some incredible 18 series NCOs bringing their skills to Colorado 519th.

519th conducted the first ever mobile SFRE for Colorado 519th, bringing 23 candidates to tryout in Wisconsin, resulting in 7 selected candidates moving to Amber phase. Our team brought 17 civilian candidates to experience the Special Forces culture in Madison Wisconsin, resulting in a several candidates choosing to enlist with Wisconsin Army National Guard and several with Colorado.

We showed up to crush.

I have many people to thank and will have to do it in another post.

2025 Recruiting Year is in the books.

New goals await.

MEDICAL ACCESSION STANDARDS

Lets talk about how medical waivers and accession standards works.

1️⃣ The Standard (DoD Level)
Every applicant—Active, Guard, or Reserve—is held to the same baseline medical accession standards set by the Department of Defense.
These standards live in DoDI 6130.03 and list every condition that can be disqualifying.

Key point people miss:
👉 MEPS does not create standards.
👉 Recruiters do not change standards.

---

2️⃣ MEPS’ Role (Medical Gatekeeper)
MEPS exists to identify medical conditions during:

Record review (Genesis)

Physical exams

Consultations

MEPS answers one question only:
❌ “Does this condition meet DoD accession standards?”

If the answer is no → DQ is issued.
MEPS does not approve waivers. Ever.

---

3️⃣ Who Approves Waivers? (This Is Where Components Differ)

Once a DQ exists, the military component decides whether to accept the risk.

🔹 Active Duty

Centralized waiver authorities

Generally stricter, especially for chronic or recent conditions

Mission-ready focus, worldwide deployability

🔹 National Guard

Waivers routed through state and NGB channels

Still risk-based, not automatic

🔹 Army Reserve

Federal waiver authority

Similar standards to Active, sometimes more flexible than AD

Unit vacancy and readiness matter

Important truth:
👉 A waiver denial in one component does NOT automatically mean denial in another.

---

4️⃣ What Actually Helps a Waiver Not opinions. Not “I feel fine.” Not Google.

What matters:

Clean, complete medical documentation

Time since last symptoms or treatment

Functional performance

Stability without medication

Honesty (yes, Genesis will find it)

---

Bottom Line

DoD sets the rules

MEPS identifies disqualifications

The component decides whether to accept risk

Medical waivers are not loopholes.
They are risk decisions.

If you want this process to work, own it, document it, and don’t lie.

Military Entrance Processing Site (MEPS) is every aspiring service members first real steps to join the military. Each MEPS looks different, but operates effectively the same.

As an applicant you will take your aptitude exam (ASVAB), medical examination (sometimes called a physical), before signing your enlistment documents and swearing into your respective branch.

Your day at MEPS can be greatly improved by your attitude and your demeanor or it can be greatly lessened. Its up to you.

Here are my top three tips to a successful MEPS visit.

-Be respectful to everyone you meet, civilians, service members, and other applicants. Give a little to get a little.
-Own your process. Think "I know what my mission is here today" or "I know what I came here to accomplish" vs "I showed up because my recruiter told me to be here".
-Lean into waivers. Be honest in your medical processing. 80 percent of applicants require one type of waiver or another. Talk to your recruiter and get documents for your waivers ahead of time.

Pro tip: your family can see you take the oath of enlistment. Joining the military is a big moment and a stepping stone to a lot of opportunities in your next ohase of life. Invite your people and support system to join you when you take that big step.

No matter what, keep your head up and stay focused on your goal!

If you want to start crushing your physical training, start with the basics.

Identify key behaviors you need to model.

Set a goal. Set your alarm. Set out your clothes.

Prime your body. Hit the road.

Here's the breakdown:

3x10 Thoracic Rotations (each side)
3x10 Ankle Rockers (each side)
3x10 Pushups (slow)

Workout
30 to 45 steady state run (never out of breath)

Cooldown

Get after your Monday.

We laid a brother in arms to rest yesterday.

This NCO embodied every word of the Special Forces Creed.

His actions were always true, his demeanor was quiet, but when everyone listened when he spoke.

You could see the impact this man made on every person he interacted with.

Father, brother, teacher, mentor.

Casey, you will be missed. I'm sorry I didnt make more of the opportunity to learn more from you while you were here.

This isn't goodbye, its see you later.

Happy Veterans day. I have been incredibly lucky in my 15 year career to meet some amazing people, do dome incredible things, and visit some amazing places.

This past year was filled with working Special Forces Recruiting, starting anew career as MEPS Guidance counselor, shooting my first TAG match in ten years.

I am so proud to wear my uniform every day. I am more proud to serve alongside some incredible people everyday. My team constantly reminds me that I can and will be better, every day.

To all Veterans, old and young, thanks for serving our Country. Now more than ever, we need patriots to stand up, put on the uniform and go out and do great things for themselves and the United States.

Cheers to the next 15 years of going out and crushing life in the Army!

SOF Truth #1: Humans Are More Important Than Hardware

The strength of Special Forces doesn’t reside in gear or gadgets on a team. It lies in the people who carry the mission.

What happens when technology fails, batteries die, or the comms go dark?

Human spirit keeps moving forward.

Grit, discipline, and teamwork turn impossible into possible.

Every mission in Special Forces depends on individuals who are trained to the highest standards, capable of leading and following, adapting and overcoming.

These warriors rely on each other, not just on equipment.

Machines can assist. Hardware can enhance.
But only humans can endure.

How are you preparing yourself for the mission ahead?

SOF Truth #4

Competent Special Operations Forces cannot be created after emergencies occur.

Colorado 519th SFG works to impact the largest audience possible to showcase SF capabilities and expose candidates to SF culture and challenges.

The 519th SFG cadre brings experience and expertise to every interaction they have. This exposure shows candidates the mindset and roadmap to becoming a successful Special Forces professional.

These Green Berets truly want every person they interact with to become the best version of themselves, whether they want to pursue the SOF pathway or not.

These types of interactions are based on the continuous need our Country has for highly competent professional warfighters.

Pictures from our Wisconsin Special Forces Experience, designed to expose civilians to the Special Forces challenges and culture.

Are you ready?

Colorado Army National Guard TAG Match.

My team of several recruiters got the honor and pleasure of shooting with some of the finest shooters in our organization. We had lots of fun, learned lots of lessons in shooting, and put several thousand rounds of ammunition down range. This was all paid for by the State of Colorado to improve the skills of our Colorado Guardsmen.

I had the honor to shoot the first TAG match in 2014, over ten years ago. I was a young corporal, missing some development as a marksman and soldier. It was great to come back and see how much Ive grown, and how much this event has grown since. I got to see some old friends from my Infantry days and make some new friends in the growing ranks of the COARNG.

20 of the top shooters received the coveted Governor's badge, recognizing their competencies as a Soldier.

Our shooting team took third in one of the team matches, marking a major win for our team!

Unfortunately, I only made 23 overall, just missing the mark. I look forward to shooting again next year once my schedule at MEPS allows!

ALWAYS IMPROVING.
