Twenty-five years have passed, yet we remember.
We remember the 2,977 lives taken far too soon. We remember the families whose lives were forever changed. We remember the fear and heartbreak of that day—and the incredible courage, compassion, and unity that followed.
We especially remember the firefighters, police officers, EMS personnel, dispatchers, military members, and countless other first responders who ran toward danger while others were trying to escape. Many gave their lives that day, and many more carried the physical and emotional effects of their service for years afterward.
For those of us in the fire service, September 11 will always hold a special weight. 343 FDNY firefighters answered their final alarm that morning. Their courage, sacrifice, and commitment to serving others will never be forgotten.
Twenty-five years later, an entire generation has grown up without memories of that day. It is now our responsibility to keep telling the stories, honoring the lives lost, and remembering the extraordinary bravery shown in our nation’s darkest hours.
Today, we pause for those who never came home, those who responded without hesitation, those who continue to live with the effects of that day, and the families who carry their memories forward.
May we never forget the lives.
May we never forget the sacrifice.
May we never forget the heroes.
