We have made the switch from red lighting to green to recognize and bring awareness to May being Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental health is a subject some people have difficult time discussing. Some are afraid to seek help because they are afraid it shows weakness, or they fear being judged, or that they will be thought of as being weak. In reality, the more it is discussed and the more people realize that "it is ok to not be ok", then more people can get the help they need. That is why we are lighting up our building for the remainder of the month of May, to recognize mental health awareness. We invite you to do the same, and let those that struggle know they are supported!

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation launched Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters in 2017 to commemorate the Foundation’s 25th anniversary. Held annually during the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, this tribute has grown to include fire departments, families, and communities across the country lighting their homes and buildings in red to honor fallen firefighters.

This year Albemarle County Fire Rescue organized a county wide effort to have all stations illuminate their building in recognition of firefighters who have given their lives in the line of duty. Our station will be lit up in red through May 3rd in remembrance of those brave men and women. We invite you to join us by lighting your home up as well as a symbol of support and remembrance.

You never know what your next shift will bring. Tonight's adventure was not one for the adrenaline ju**ie, but more for those that care for feathered creatures and like to solve puzzles. One of our Earlysville neighbors called the station hoping we could help with a strange situation. They had a basketball goal that a bird had gotten trapped in and couldn't get out. of They could still hear the bird, so they knew it was alive and asked if we would be willing to come help rescue the bird. Not knowing if we would be able to help, we said we would come take a look. Once there, a plan was developed to flip, dismantle, and somehow coax the bird out of his little predicament. With enough hands, things went smoothly, and once the pole was apart our resident EVFC Vet Tech went to work. With the aide of a broom handle he was able to get the bird to roost on the handle while he slowly pulled it towards the opening until the bird was free. Voila!.........but wait.......what's that? There's a second bird? Back to work with the broom handle. The second little feathered munchkin was a little more skiddish, but was eventually freed as well. The rescue of the second bird is in the attached video. That folks, is what makes what we do so daggone rewarding. Helping a neighbor, using your nugget to figure something out you have never done before, and being a TEAM to get the mission accomplished no matter how big or small the task is.

Really hard to think about this with ice on the ground and rain falling from the sky, but it is that time of year where ground cover dries out quickly and fires can spread in the blink of an eye. If you need to burn, be mindful of conditions and location. We love our neighbors and we love meeting them, but under the right conditions! Don't make a brush fire one of those conditions!
