Eagle County Conservation District

Conserving natural resources in Eagle County through collaboration, education, and cooperation

The District works in cooperation with various entities to accomplish their mission. On a local level the District works with the Extension Office in various programs such as the “Small Acreage Workshop” and the County Fair. The District participates in various conservation programs with displays and demonstrations such as the water trailer which explains the effects of water erosion. The District also provides scholarships for youth and teachers to several conservation workshops.

W**d ’Em & Reap: Diffuse Knapw**d 🌱

Diffuse knapw**d is an invasive plant that spreads quickly and crowds out native vegetation.

Look for:

🌱 Highly branched, bushy stems
🌸 Small white or pale-pink flowers
🌿 Finely divided, gray-green leaves
⚠️ Sharp, spiny bracts surrounding each flower head

Remove plants before they produce seed. Small infestations can be hand-pulled when the soil is moist. Just make sure to remove as much of the taproot as possible. Bag and dispose of flowering plants to prevent further spread.

As days get shorter, your landscape may need less water. Check your irrigation controller and consider dialing back your seasonal adjustment by 10–20%.

🌱 Restoration in action across Eagle County!

This June, ECCD partnered with the Town of Eagle Open Space and Rocky Mountain Youth Corps for a 10-day restoration effort across three Town-managed open space areas, supported by America’s Ecosystem Restoration Initiative funding administered by ECCD.

In just 10 days, crews:
🌱 Restored or treated approximately 26 acres
🌾 Applied 425 pounds of native seed
🥾 Rehabilitated roughly 2,000 linear feet of unauthorized trails
🌿 Removed noxious w**ds and helped restore disturbed soils

Work took place at Eagle Ranch Open Space, Brush Creek Open Space, and Haymaker Trailhead, helping improve native vegetation, reduce w**d pressure, protect natural areas, and keep recreation on designated trails.

The project also gave Rocky Mountain Youth Corps crews valuable hands-on experience in natural resource management and public lands stewardship.

Monitoring will continue over the next several growing seasons to see how these restoration efforts take root.

This is the kind of on-the-ground partnership ECCD is proud to support,bringing together funding, local partners, and capable crews to get meaningful conservation work done across Eagle County landscapes. 🌱

🌿 W**d ’Em & Reap Wednesday: Musk Thistle

Musk thistle is a biennial noxious w**d that can quickly take over pastures and disturbed areas.

🌱 How to spot it: Large pink-purple flowers that often droop or nod, with spiny, deeply lobed leaves that have a prominent white midrib.

✂️ How to remove it: Dig or cut below the root crown before it goes to seed. If flowers are already present, bag and dispose of the seed heads to prevent spread.

A little removal now can prevent a lot more musk thistle later!

W**d ’Em & Reap Wednesday: Leafy Spurge

Don’t let this invasive plant spread.

Leafy spurge is a deep-rooted noxious w**d that quickly takes over pastures and open spaces, crowding out native plants and reducing forage for livestock.

How to spot it:
• Yellow-green flower-like bracts
• Milky white sap
• Narrow blue-green leaves

How to remove it:
•Wear gloves when handling, its milky sap can irritate skin.
•Pull or dig small patches, removing as much of the root system as possible.
•For larger infestations, apply a labeled herbicide during flowering or in the fall.
•Monitor and retreat as needed, leafy spurge often resprouts from its roots.
