We are officially in baby season! (Calf not included in photo).

A friendly reminder to not approach any wildlife, especially during calving season. If you see a deer fawn in the woods, leave it alone!! The mom has not abandoned them, but they risk being left if they smell like humans. Leave them be, as their mom is probably very close.

A special reminder that moose and bears are especially protective of their babies, so keep a safe distance! Always follow the rule of thumb!

Week 3’s flower of the week is the Indian Paintbrush! These can be found along East and West Brush Creek, and on most of our trails

Castilleja, commonly known as paintbrush, Indian paintbrush, or prairie-fire, is a genus of about 200 species of annual and perennial mostly herbaceous plants native to the west of the Americas from Alaska south to the Andes, northern Asia, and one species as far west as the Kola Peninsula in northwestern Russia.

Tilford claims that the flowers of Indian paintbrush are edible. However, these plants have a tendency to absorb and concentrate selenium in their tissues from the soils in which they grow, and can be potentially very toxic if the roots or green parts of the plant are consumed.

This weeks flower is the Geranium! From the Cranesbill family, Geraniaceae, contains more than 800 species worldwide. Two of the largest subgroups, the Geranium genus (the cranesbills) and the Erodium genus (the storksbills), have pink, red, mauve or blue five-petalled flowers.

These flowers are ideal for native bumblebees, solitary bees, and syrphid flies for its pollen and nectar.

Fun fact: Wild geranium was used by the Cherokee, Choctaw, Haudenosaunee, Menominee, Meskwaki, and Ojibwa for medicinal purposes, including for relief from a sore mouth, as a laxative, as an antiseptic, and as an emetic.

What’s a moose’s favorite party game?

Truth or Deer!!

A friendly reminder to always keep your distance from wildlife! Follow the rule of thumb: if you can cover the animal with your thumb, you are at a safe distance. This distance is usually 25 yards from most wildlife, and 100 yards from large wildlife. This will keep both you and the wildlife safe!
