Vilas County Residents........Our County has been getting hit hard with scam attempts. An unknown person has been calling people and pretending to be a relative in some sort of trouble. They have also been stating that they are either bail bondsman, or lawyers representing a relative. They are requesting large amounts of cash and stating there is a "gag" order in place and you are not to be talking about it. If you receive a call or someone arrives at your home demanding money for the above situation, please call the Vilas County Sheriff's Office. Please let as many senior citizens know as possible, as these are the targeted age group.

This is an ongoing scam that counties around us are experiencing as well.

We would like to wish all a very Merry Christmas. On this Christmas, we would like to thank all that helped keep our community safe and those that served on this Christmas Day. Dispatchers, Corrections Officers, and Patrol were provided food by Wild Turkey (Conover) on Christmas Eve and Dublins on Christmas Day. A number of years ago, the Sheriff's Office and the Salvation Army partnered to make Christmas Day special for those in need. The Salvation Army provided presents for those in need and the Sheriff's Office was able to deliver presents today. It truly takes a village. Thanks to all, and have a Merry Christmas.

We have been notified about a post that has been circulating the Land O Lakes area today. This post is false, Randy was not hit by anything. Randy is a local resident that was riding his bike while adjusting a light on his bike. Randy lost his balance and fell off his bike. Land O Lakes EMS arrived on scene and determined that nothing indicated that Randy was struck by something or someone. Today, our Office investigated this bike accident, not because we thought EMS missed something, but because there was so much concern regarding Randy and what "could of" happened. Again, there is no evidence or reason to believe that Randy was hit by anyone or anything. Randy, unfortunately, fell off his bike and struck his head on concrete.

Apparently, it's Scam Monday!!! We have received many calls regarding residents receiving calls from the Sheriff’s Department. The scammers are using local numbers including the Sheriff’s Office actual number.

If they claim to be law enforcement, and say that you have a warrant, owe money for a citation or didn't show up for court please hang up.

DO NOT provide any personal information or purchase gift cards! We will never call to request money, gift cards or payment of any sort.

If it doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t.
