Today’s patient is a Common Raven. And in fact, this is a fledgling (baby) raven! You can tell by the pink gape at the edge of the beak, pale eyes, and pin feathers (new feathers that haven’t opened from the keratin sheath).
Ravens can breed as early as February, with eggs laid in March, and new fledglings leaving the nest in April/May.
This one was sitting in the same spot for a couple days and didn’t attempt to fly away when approached. We are giving this young one everything it needs to get healthy again 🖤

This dark-eyed junco was treated after hitting a window. He’s now rejoined his flock!
If a bird hits a window and appears stunned, it’s important to act fast and contact a wildlife rehabber, even if it appears fine and is active. Wildlife rehabbers are trained to look for abnormalities and injuries that come with window strikes. Many times, birds recover just enough to fly away, and then die later from their injuries. These can include:
- cracked beaks or broken bones
- head trauma, concussions or internal bleeding
- eye diseases or injury
As always, any time you are in doubt if an animal needs help, give us a call right away!
