Maverick County Receives $360,000 in Operation Stonegarden Funding

Sheriff Tom Schmerber and Chief Deputy De Leon attended a community meeting hosted by Congressman Henry Cuéllar in El Indio, Texas, where Congressman Cuéllar announced $360,000 in Operation Stonegarden funding to enhance border security efforts in Maverick County.

This funding will help provide additional resources and equipment to better support our deputies and strengthen our ability to protect and serve the residents of our community.

The Maverick County Sheriff’s Office sincerely appreciates Congressman Cuéllar’s continued support and efforts to secure funding that helps better equip our department and enhance public safety.

Maverick County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the 600 block of Guisseppi regarding a report of an aggressive male subject.

Upon arrival, deputies made contact with the complainant, who reported that her son, identified as Mario Alberto Marquez Jr., 27, had arrived at the residence and became verbally aggressive toward her.

According to the complainant, Marquez Jr. made threats of violence that caused her to fear for her safety. The complainant also reported that Marquez Jr. damaged the residence by breaking the door frame to a bedroom.

Following further investigation, Mario Alberto Marquez Jr., 27, was placed under arrest for Assault – Family Violence (Intimidation). He was transported to the Tom Bowles Detention Center for further processing.

The Maverick County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to responding to reports of family violence and protecting victims in our community.

All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

🚨 TRAFFIC ALERT – MAJOR MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT 🚨

The Maverick County Sheriff’s Office is advising the public of a major motor vehicle accident on US 277 North.

US 277 North will remain closed until further notice. Please avoid the area and use alternate routes whenever possible.

One person was airlifted to a hospital for medical treatment.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) will be investigating the accident.

Please slow down, use caution, and allow emergency personnel and investigators to safely work at the scene.

Maverick County Sheriff’s Office — DWI Arrest

The Maverick County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 300 block of Old Pioneer Road regarding a motor vehicle accident involving a white pickup truck that had collided with a chain-link fence.

Upon arrival, deputies learned that the driver had left the scene prior to their arrival. Deputies searched the surrounding area and located the driver, identified as Ruben Alberto Esquivel, 28 years old.

Deputies observed multiple signs of possible intoxication, including slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, the odor of an alcoholic beverage, and difficulty maintaining his balance.

Esquivel was taken into custody and arrested for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI). He was transported to the Tom Bowles Detention Center for further processing.

The pickup truck was towed by a local wrecker service to the Maverick County Sheriff’s Office impound yard.

The Maverick County Sheriff’s Office reminds everyone: If you choose to drink, do not drive. Always make responsible arrangements for a safe ride home.

All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Commander Ramos and Investigator Garcia recently attended the Texas Association of Vehicle Theft Investigators (TAVTI) Conference in Norman, Oklahoma, where they participated in specialized training designed to further develop and refine their auto theft investigation skills.

These training opportunities allow our investigators to stay current with new trends, technology, investigative techniques, and industry practices while continuing to strengthen our ability to combat vehicle theft.

The conference also provided an opportunity to meet and network with investigators and law enforcement professionals from across Texas. Building these relationships allows us to share information, learn from one another, and develop partnerships that can help us work smarter and more effectively when investigating cases that cross county and jurisdictional lines.

Training makes us better. Networking makes us stronger. Partnerships help us solve cases.

The Maverick County Sheriff’s Office Auto Crimes Unit remains committed to continuing to learn, improve, and bring that knowledge back home to better serve the citizens of Maverick County.
