Black Hawk Middle School Black Hawk is one of six middle schools in School District 196. Black Hawk opened in 1994. Thank you for visiting our page!

Black Hawk opened in 1994 and is a 193,000 square foot facility designed to deliver educational services to 1,200 students in grades six through eight. The school's eight identical houses are organized into three 3-story towers along one side of the school's north wing. The sky-lit atrium, referred to as "Main Street" divides the houses from the administrative offices, band room, choir room and media center located on the opposite side of "the street." The lower level entry, at the south end of "the street", links the houses and support spaces with the school's physical education, auditorium, and cafeteria facilities. Black Hawk offers 30 different co-curricular programs in athletics, fine & performing arts and student clubs. Black Hawk has been featured in the National Middle School Journal and continues today to be a leader as other school districts from around the country come to tour Black Hawk for ideas on design and programming.

🏆🚵‍♀️ We have a STATE CHAMPION at Black Hawk!

Congratulations to BHMS eighth grader Mari A., who earned the 8th Grade Girls State Champion title competing with the District 196 Mountain Biking Team! 💚🖤

She was the only District 196 rider to bring home an individual state championship title this year! What an incredible accomplishment! Your hard work and determination are worth celebrating, and your Panther community is cheering you on!

A big shoutout to all the team’s riders, coaches, and families for a season of teamwork and dedication.

BHMS staff and students wore orange this Wednesday in support of - a national stand against bullying as part of bullying prevention month. We know middle school can be hard, but we stand united in supporting our students and teaching them the skills to say something and do something to help others in our community.

Over MEA weekend, our BHMS Panthers headed to Washington DC for long, packed days with learning, exploring, and making memories!

From Mount Vernon and the White House to the Lincoln Memorial and so many other monuments and memorials, students experienced history beyond the classroom. Visits to the Holocaust Museum and the National Museum of African American History and Culture offered powerful opportunities for learning and reflection, while the natural history and National Geographic museums sparked curiosity and discovery. We even squeezed in some royal entertainment at Medieval Times!

Through all the miles walked (around 26), sights seen, and time spent together, our students did an amazing job representing BHMS in our nation’s capitol. We’re so proud of these Panthers and grateful to the five teacher chaperones who helped make this adventure possible!

What are you doing during MEA? These 8th graders are touring DC this long weekend.
