Today’s rains caused disruption to nature in Duson.

Earlier today, 9 baby possums were found at St. Theresa Catholic Church, clearly moved to higher ground by momma possum.

Concerned for their safety, Father Nick contacted Chief Kip Judice. Duson police officers responded to rescue the tiny animals. The possums were then safely transported to a licensed wildlife rehabilitator in the Maurice area who reports all possums are healthy and are expected to be cared for before being released in time.

Later, a part of the scripture from Sunday’s mass was shared with Chief Judice by Father Nick: “I will not leave you orphaned. I will come to you.” — John 14:18

Sometimes, God places opportunities in front of us to show compassion in unexpected ways. Thanks to the quick actions of those involved, these little ones were not left orphaned after all — a small reminder that in times of need, our officers will always answer the call. 🖤💙

A chemical leak was reported to Duson Police, Duson Fire and other first responders just after 7 AM on Tuesday May 5, 2026. Emergency first responders were able to successfully evacuate the adjacent industrial park, Waste Connections Transfer Station and LOVES Truck Stop.

After about 1 hour the leak was shut off and appears the leak was caused by a bleed off valve which malfunctioned.

The business was FIBA Technologies located at 245 Lexington Drive, Duson, LA.

Haz Mat responders issued the all clear at 8:10 AM, a heavy first responder presence continues at this time as a preventive measure.

3 first responders and 3 employees of the affected company are being treated at local hospitals for exposure. The conditions are all listed as stable.

Duson Police want to thank the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office, the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office, Louisiana State Police, Acadian Ambulance, Duson Fire Department, Mire Fire Department, Lafayette Fire Department and Haz Mat Responders from both Lafayette Fire and State Police for the roles each played in this incident.

Also a huge thank you to Carencro Police Chief David Anderson and Scott Police Chief Chad Leger for their offers to send resources.

All evacuations and shelter in place orders have been lifted.

𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐀𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧, 𝐋𝐀 - Sheriff Jeff Bergeron reports that just before 11:00 a.m. this morning, deputies responded to an incident on Interstate 10 eastbound near the LA 1 exit involving the intentional striking of a Duson Police Department unit, resulting in injuries to the officer.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a moving vehicle intentionally struck a marked Duson Police Department unit while traveling side by side.

Deputies took 42-year-old John Cuevas of Madison, MS, into custody after determining the act was intentional. Cuevas was a front-seat passenger in a 2023 Land Rover SUV when he grabbed the steering wheel and forced the vehicle into the police unit as both vehicles were traveling eastbound.

The Duson police officer was transported to a local hospital with moderate injuries.

John Cuevas was booked into the West Baton Rouge Parish Detention Center on the following charges:

• Attempted First Degree Murder of a Police Officer
• Aggravated Criminal Damage to Property
• Aggravated Obstruction of a Highway of Commerce

According to the Duson Police Department, Chief Kip Judice confirmed that Cuevas had previously been arrested by their agency.
