At last week's SAFRE Conference Captain Brandon Lee and Driver James Hicks led a class called "Vertical Ventilation on Peaked Roofs".

Ventilation is an imperative part of any structure fire, and the DFD led the way in teaching how to perform it safely, efficiently, and in coordination with interior crews.

Just after 3PM we responded to a structure fire at the 800 block of Kent Street with significant fire and smoke showing from the side of the home.

Firefighters deployed an aggressive attack to get the fire under control.

The home was unoccupied at the time and no injuries were reported. We are investigating the cause of the fire.

Never leave your kitchen while cooking!

Last night just after 8PM we responded to a structure fire in the 400 block of E. Pilot St.

38 firefighters were able to bring the second story fire under control in less than ten minutes.

This fire was caused by unattended cooking. To prevent kitchen fires, always stay in the room while food is being prepared and keep all cooking surfaces clear of any debris.

Fire Chief Robert Zoldos and Deputy Chief David Swain taught a class called “Command Like a Pirate: Fireground Tactical Leadership” at this week’s SAFRE Conference.

It covered ways to successfully lead a Fireground, no matter how unpredictable the conditions are.

After all, a good Captain doesn’t manage an incident - they COMMAND it!
