Steering Committee, Inc. (MLK Steering Committee) is a 501 (c)(3) community-based organization committed to preserving the legacy and example of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by planning appropriate ceremonies and programs in recognition of the King Holiday. The MLK Steering Committee works to improve the quality of life for all citizens by reaching out to those who continue to struggle with issues

of poverty, unemployment, drug addiction, homelessness and other social problems. We honor Dr. King for his work toward racial equality and economic justice for all people for his commitment to nonviolence and for his stand against war and militarism.

:: On January 8, 2024, the Durham Board of County Commissioners issued a Resolution Celebrating & Honoring the Life & Service of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Resolution emphatically calls upon every resident of Durham County to actively acknowledge and pay tribute to the profound life and contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. His unwavering commitment to fostering a free and just world is highlighted. Dr. King, a stalwart champion of justice, dedicated his life to fortifying the essence of the American character, relentlessly advocating for the civil rights of all citizens. Through the powerful principles of non-violence, he imparted invaluable lessons, teaching that courage conquers fear, love transcends hate, acceptance dispels prejudice, and mutual regard extinguishes enmity.

The Resolution was read and presented by Vice Chair Nimasheena Burns to the Vice Chair of the Durham Community Martin Luther King, Jr. Steering Committee, Inc. DeWarren K. Langley.

She is co-founder of First Chronicles Community Church with her husband, Pastor William Lucas, JD, M. Div. serving as Executive Minister.

Reverend Lindsay-Lucas earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a Bachelor of Social Work Degree from North Carolina Central University, Master of Divinity from Duke University Divinity School; Master of Education in Early Childhood Education Leadership from the University of North Carolina in Wilmington and an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education from Durham Technical Community College.
