Yesterday, we shared an in-depth look at the latest school performance data, and today, we’re putting some of those numbers in the spotlight!

There is so much to celebrate across Durham Public Schools! These results represent the hard work of our scholars, the dedication of our teachers, principals, and staff, and the continued support of our families and community partners. Every gain, milestone, and achievement reflects the collective effort happening in our schools each day.

As you swipe through these DPS pride points, we hope you’ll join us in celebrating the people behind the progress and all that our scholars and schools have accomplished.

It all started with one incredible sentence: “My aunt is an astronaut!”

When Little River Montessori student Evan shared those words with his teacher, Katherine McGonnell, they sparked a yearlong journey of curiosity and discovery. Ms. McGonnell’s class began learning about NASA astronaut Christina Koch and following the historic Artemis II mission as its crew traveled around the Moon and farther from Earth than any humans in history.

Today, that journey came full circle when Koch walked through the doors of Little River!

Students led a Q&A about her training, life as an astronaut, and extraordinary journey through space. Koch also encouraged our young explorers to remain curious, dream boldly, and never stop asking questions.

Thank you, Ms. McGonnell, for transforming one student’s special connection into an unforgettable learning experience for an entire school. Thank you, Evan, for sharing a story that helped bring space exploration to Little River!

Thank you, Christina Koch, for showing our scholars that with education, curiosity, and courage, even the Moon is within reach!
