There are hundreds of great reasons to visit Durham, affectionately called “The Bull City”. The culture is colorful, the charm is irresistible, and the opportunities are limitless. Durham is home to Research Triangle Park, Duke and North Carolina Central Universities. One of the most important points of interest about Durham is its rich Black history. The Black Durham experience in the early 1900′
s was unique and proudly recognized as such by prominent Black leaders like W.E.B. Together, the Black working-class and the Black privileged created the self-reliant residential and business community they called Hayti. Some of the richest Black Businessmen in the country lived in Hayti. In the early 1900’s, nearly 200 successful Black owned and operated businesses existed in Hayti. Taken from the Akan language of Ghana, the word Sankofa loosely translated means “Look Back to Move Forward”. It has been evidenced by the reactions from people who have engaged our tour that much can be learned from exploring the remnants of Hayti. They have unique opportunities to hear oral histories shared by individuals who grew up in the community, worked in the tobacco factories and mills or owned successful businesses in Hayti. Our tours are designed to accommodate groups of 10-50 participants, considering demographic specifications, and complexity of the tour. Everyone on our staff is knowledgeable and dedicated with a true sense of adventure. We always enjoy showing our clients places they would not have found on their own. We are committed to making your visit to our community an informative, enjoyable and memorable experience you will be anxious to share. Jaisun McMillian
