To 🐝 honest, we had so much fun at our fifth annual Durham Bee Day! Thanks to everyone who braved the heat to celebrate our native pollinators by stopping by to learn about bees, taking a pollinator plant home, or joining in the festive Bee Day parade! Most of all, thanks to our bees for all they do to keep Durham beautiful! 🐝

The City of Durham is planting 8,500 street trees in 3 years and this planting season we got off to a great start! Swipe through for our updates on tree planting across Durham.

In tandem with the City’s efforts, Keep Durham Beautiful facilitates educational outreach, volunteer planting and tree care events, and tree giveaways.

On Tuesday, we were joined by 4 volunteers from Hughes Marino and one of our amazing Tree Keepers to mulch and prune 29 street trees along N. Roxboro and Corporation. 🌳🦺

Mulching helps to retain moisture in the soil, provide nutrients for the tree, and protect the tree from grass, weeds, and equipment. Pruning also benefits the trees by encouraging strong tree growth while removing any dangerous or dying limbs.

We're so grateful for the work of these volunteers that helps to maintain and improve our urban tree canopy!

On Friday, we were joined by 41 volunteers from Fidelity who cleared around 21,344 square feet of invasive plants at Sherwood Park and removed 52 pounds of litter, diverting 26 pounds into recycling. 🌿♻️

Swipe through for some impressive before and after shots of their work! They removed tons of invasive privet, wisteria, mimosa, and some English ivy from all across the park.

June is National Pollinator Month! 🐝🐦‍⬛🦋🦇🪲🪰 Pollinator species like bees, birds, butterflies, bats, beetles, moths, wasps, and flies play an incredibly important role in our ecosystems by allowing plants to reproduce. 🌿🌻🌾

Pollinators populations are in decline for many reasons including pesticide use, loss of habitat through human development, and fluctuations in environments due to climate change which have affected their ability to feed and live in particularly areas.

You can join our efforts to protect native pollinator plants by learning more at our upcoming Durham Bee Day, planting native pollinator-friendly plants, reducing or eliminating pesticide use in your home or business, or even just by talking to your friends and family about pollinator health and why it's important!

Come out to Durham Central Park on Saturday, June 13 to kick-off National Pollinator Week with us at our fifth annual Durham Bee Day! 🐝 🐝 🐝 Learn all about bees and other pollinators and how you can keep them healthy. This will “bee” a free, family-friendly event!

See a demonstration hive, taste different types of honey, meet local beekeepers, take home a free pollinator plant, and join us at 10:30 for a bee parade!
