Please be aware of a current scam involving fraudulent text messages claiming to be from the DMV. These messages are not legitimate.
We encourage everyone to use caution, do not respond, click any links, or provide personal information. If you receive one of these messages, delete it immediately.
Below is an example of that text message:
"North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles - Final Statutory Notice
Our departmental audit shows that the traffic violation linked to your account is currently past due and unresolved. This serves as the final notice prior to the ex*****on of enforcement measures.
Under Chapter 20 of the North Carolina General Statutes, failure to resolve this debt by April 3, 2026, will result in:
- The infraction being formally recorded with the NCDMV.
- Revocation of your vehicle's registration, effective April 4, 2026.
- A 30-day minimum suspension of your North Carolina driver's license.
- Referral to a collection agency with a potential 35% penalty fee.
