Most of us cadets spend summer break relaxing.

Cadet James Kelly decided to run 42.58 miles in 6 hours last week instead.

Scroll through to see some of the wild ways that distance stacks up. From massive landmarks to ridiculous amounts of football fields, C/Kelly’s mileage this week was no joke.

Safe to say the summer grind is alive and well. 🔥

Over the last four years, Master Sergeant Austin-Rozelle Murphy has supported and shaped Det 585. From commissioning 22 cadets to leading us with compassion, accountability, and her unforgettable “what we not gonna do” briefs, she taught us what it truly means to care for people. With her parting words that, “But not just for you, but to help fill other people’s cups when they’re empty.”

Whether it was through hard conversations, bright smiles, or an iced coffee in hand, she always showed up for this wing. Her impact will be felt long after her time at Duke.

While we’ll miss her deeply, we’re grateful her next stop at Pope Army Airfield isn’t too far away. Thank you for everything, Master Sergeant Rozelle-Murphy, Det 585 is better because of you.

Yesterday, Detachment 585 had the honor of commissioning 4 outstanding young men and women as Second Lieutenants in the Air Force and Space Force. These high achievers are going to do amazing things in our nation’s military. We were lucky to have captured this photo which includes every person from our detachment past and present who had a hand in sending these lieutenants into the wild blue yonder. From previous Det 585 Commander, LTC (Ret) Michael Nishimura, previous Recruiting Flight Commander, Major Ryan Allen, and previous Uniform Custodian, Ms. Camay Barnes and our current cadre, we know you should all sleep better in knowing these second lieutenants are now on the wall. We are beyond proud and excited to see great things from this group of four! Photo by:

COUNTDOWN TO COMMISSIONING—Today is the day when Detachment 585 commissions four amazing cadets as Second Lieutenants in the Air Force and Space Force. Cortner Crumlish, Erin Dickerson, Megan Glasgow, and Daniel Salvador join the ranks of commissioned officer corps. They carry the torch from many before them who heard the calling and took up the profession of arms. We are proud of each of these cadets and look forward to great things from them. Join us in congratulating them, their families, loved ones and friends. Let’s go Lieutenants

COUNTDOWN TO COMMISSIONING—Our next spotlight is on Erin Dickerson. Erin is our current Cadet Wing Commander and has been a fantastic cadet during her time with Det 585, and she has a bright future ahead of her.
In four short days Det 585 will commission four cadets as Second Lieutenants in the Air Force and Space Force. These amazing young men and women will serve in various roles, but we know all of them will do amazing things as Air Force officers!

Excellence in all we do đź’Ş

In our last full week of training, DET585 committed themselves to the pursuit of excellence during their LLAB training. This week’s session included a Warrior Knowledge Quiz, Short Sleeve Blues Inspection, FTP Campus Marching, a Civil-Military Relations brief, and an Awards Ceremony brief.

Cadets are finishing the year strong and in the words of C/Sun “It never hurts to have a positive attitude”
