Early voting kicked off today in NC! And there are so many important elections on the ballot this year. One in particular in Durham is our race for School Board. Our city is rapidly changing, and the needs of our community are changing as well. Our school system is desperately in need of representation that not only looks-like the population we serve, but someone who is in authentic relationship to our most vulnerable communities, and has lived experiences that align with the students in our schools. We have the opportunity to make history by electing Alexandra Valladares to Durham School Board, and I am proudly endorsing her candidacy. This isn’t just about representation though, I challenge you to check her track record, visit her site, Alexandra has put in the work, and is the right leader at the right time for our school board. She’s got my vote, and I hope you will consider doing the same. It’s time.

Early voting starts today in NC! While much attention will be paid to the presidential races, we have a few very important races on the ballot in Durham this year, namely, the Durham Board of County Commissioners, and in that race, I am proud to officially endorse Commissioner Brenda Howerton for Durham County.

Commissioner Howerton has served Durham two terms thus far, and has been consistent in her fight for improving our public education system, growing our economy, bringing in jobs, reducing poverty and fighting for racial justice and equity. Commissioner Howerton brings wisdom, and a passion to stand up for the people of Durham, even in the face of strong opposition; she is a reliable and trustworthy voice for the county of Durham.

Commissioner Howerton has my vote, and I hope you will consider doing the same.

This made my day. Honored that students from Durham’s own Hope Valley Elementary School chose to do their black history month project on me. As a proud DPS graduate, it gives me great joy to know I’ve had even a small impact on the next generation. Durham’s future is bright!

I didn’t speak at council meeting tonite. The voices of those directly impacted by the atrocities in our city’s public housing, and those on the ground doing the work, were much more important than mine and I was honored to stand in that space and hear the power of your voices and your stories. The conditions thousands of our city’s resident’s are living in are inexcusable and we should all be ashamed that it’s went on this long. This city has failed you, on every single level. Your strength, your unity, and resilience is remarkable. I am proud to stand with you, and with the people of Durham. Please don’t mistake my decision not to speak as a lack of support. As someone who has spent most of my life holding a microphone, commanding attention, I’ve learned that sometimes, the best thing I can do is pass the microphone to those who are too often silenced or unheard in our city, and in this nation. This was your night and your time. Thank you for your strength and your courage tonight, even in a room full of people who have ignored you for years. I heard you. And So did thousands and thousands of people. Every leader doesn’t have a title or hold an office; Y’all are the true leaders of this city. I stand with McDougal. I stand with all of our DHA residents. I stand with the people who spoke truth to power tonight. You deserve better, and I’m committed to doing all that I can, to ensure you get better, today and long after the cameras have left.

Thank you Northern High School and Ms. Erricson for allowing me to come and speak to your students. I am always impressed by the thoughtful discussions our youth are having about the future of our city and am honored to have had the chance to participate today. The future of the Bull City is in good hands!

Honored to speak on a panel today along with educators and students from Durham Public Schools. We talked about the importance of representation for students of color in the books assigned at school and in general. The future is bright in Durham y’all, we got much more work to do, and I’m excited to be a part of it. Let’s do this!

18,490 people stood together for change. That’s no small feat y’all. They see us. They hear us now. Please stay encouraged. We got much more to do.

Team Gunn,

The final votes are in, and at this time I would like to congratulate Councilwoman Johnson, Councilman Reece and Councilwoman Caballero on a successful campaign and on their victory. I also want to congratulate my fellow challengers Jackie Wagstaff and Daniel Meier on great campaigns.

Secondly, I have to say thank you. Thank you to every single one of you who showed up to stand with my family and I as we fought to bring change to the city we love. Thank you to every volunteer, every person who stood at the polls, knocked on doors, put a sign in your yard, a message on Facebook/Instagram, wore a button or a t-shirt. And a huge thank you to the 18,490 people who voted for me, Joshua Gunn for Durham City Council yesterday!

I need to thank Shanetta Burris, my campaign strategist, who helped me learn so much in a short amount of time. When I decided to run for office, it was because I wanted to help the city that I love, I knew the issues and the policies but I honestly had no clue what it took to run a campaign. Shanetta came on my team and helped create an organized campaign that was based on strategy and data and the voice of the people. I would not be standing where I stand today, just a couple steps from a seat on City Council without her. If anyone asks, tell them the best campaign strategist in this city is Shanetta Burris, and I was so fortunate she believed enough in me to help turn me into a legitimate candidate.

Thank you also to Conen Morgan, my campaign consultant for helping polish this campaign and ensure we delivered professional quality material at every turn.

Thank you to my wife Charity Amanda for sacrificing so much over the past 4 months.
Thank you for keeping everything together at home and caring for me and our children as I fought my way through this difficult and taxing campaign. You are the most amazing woman and I could never thank you enough.

Thank you to the Durham Comittee on the Affairs of Black People, The Friends of Durham, The Fraternal order of Police, and the countless Durham elected officials and residents that endorsed our campaign.
There are far too many to list, but you know you are and I hope you know, I appreciate you.

Let’s be clear, while we may not have gained a seat on city council, this is a victory. It was 3 against 1. Three incumbents in a bloc, versus one candidate. What we overcame is incredible. Faced with seemingly insurmountable odds, we stood tall against the largest political machine in Durham, and without the support of many of Durham’s most influential political figures, and we came within 395 votes of winning a seat on Durham City Council! 395 votes y’all.... only 0.41% .

Before this election, there was a sentiment that our votes no longer count. The PA’s voice had become so dominant that I was told “the election doesn’t happen in November, it happens at the PA endorsement meeting,” well we just proved them wrong and proved that in fact, every single vote counts. We were one neighborhood away. One church congregation, One Sorority away from restoring the voice of all people in Durham’s democracy. They hear us now y’all. They see us. And we ain’t going anywhere.

Today my family and I will rest, and take a few moments just to be together. I will not be replying to media requests for a few days, nor will I be available much on social media. I’ll be taking some time to prioritize my wife and kids, but make no mistake, we are not done yet. Please accept my sincerest gratitude for all of your love and support. I’m proud of Durham, and proud to be in service to this city. There’s much more to be done, this city needs us. Please don’t give up; I most certainly will not.

Peace and Love,

J.Gunn

The gap between good intentions and impact is filled when leaders are in authentic relationship with the communities we serve. That’s what we are missing on Council today, and what we seek to change tomorrow. Do you believe Better is Possible? Will you stand with us? Vote tomorrow, and ensure that this city works for all people.
