Over one year ago we brought concerns to the city about the staffing shortage and use of the Raleigh 911 center which created a delay in calls, and provided limited information and inaccurate mapping.

Our members have been working extra shifts at DECC for over a year now. In the past month on occasion we’ve increased it from 1 to 2 firefighters in addition to working extra shifts to put firetrucks back in service.

“Firefighters are the only city employees making less than the city’s hourly livable wage ordinace, yet it seems we’re the ones being relied on the most right now. Burn out is a real thing, look at the 911 center. Firefighters aren’t far behind, especially as other agencies require less for more money”, said President Jimie Wright.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the DFD and the family of Assistant Fire Marshal Scotty Merritt.

The N.C. burn ban has been lifted for all remaining counties due to improved weather conditions. “We saw some much-needed rain during the weekend, and that has thankfully helped bring fire danger down, allowing us to lift burn ban restrictions statewide,” said N.C. Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “Still, I’d caution residents to remain vigilant about burning responsibly and safely. Make sure you have a valid burn permit and contact your NCFS county ranger for wildfire prevention and fire safety tips.” Learn more below and stay safe!

A burn ban has been issued for all counties in North Carolina due to hazardous wildfire conditions. This ban, which took effect at 5 p.m. today, will stay in effect until further notice. “It is fall wildfire season in North Carolina, and we are seeing wildfire activity increase due to dry conditions,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “With these ongoing conditions, a statewide burn ban is necessary to reduce the risk of fires starting and spreading quickly. Our top priority is always to protect lives, property and forestland across the state.” Learn more information about the ban, including FAQ's, in the link below!

Make sure your turkey is completely thawed out and measure how much oil you need by placing the turkey in the pot and putting water in it first.
