Our team has been hard at work placing trail cameras across our hunting areas in preparation for this fall’s Youth Draw Hunts! 📸🦌

These cameras help us monitor wildlife activity and gather valuable information to ensure a successful and safe hunting experience for participating youth hunters.

If your young hunter is hoping to take part this season, be sure to keep an eye on our page—Youth Draw Hunt applications will be opening soon! More details and application information will be announced in the near future.

🐍 Venomous snakes are an important part of our ecosystem, and as temperatures rise, you’re more likely to encounter them while enjoying the outdoors on the reservation.

Keep an eye and ear out when hiking, fishing, working outdoors, or exploring wooded and rocky areas. Watch where you step, place your hands, and listen for warning sounds such as a rattlesnake’s distinctive rattle.

If you encounter a venomous snake:
✔️ Stay calm
✔️ Give it plenty of space
✔️ Slowly back away
✔️ Never attempt to handle, capture, or kill the snake

Most snakes will avoid people when given the opportunity. By staying alert and respecting wildlife, we can safely share the land with these important native species.

🦌🌿 Every trip outdoors has the potential to create a memory that lasts a lifetime. 🌿🐍

Whether it was spotting a trophy buck at sunrise, watching a flock of turkeys cross a field, seeing a bald eagle soar overhead, coming across a snake in the leaves, or encountering a curious black bear from a safe distance, wildlife encounters remind us why conservation matters.

We want to hear from you!

❓ What is the most memorable wildlife encounter you’ve experienced in Choctaw Country or while enjoying the outdoors?

Share your story (and photos if you have them) in the comments below. Your experience might inspire someone else to get outside and appreciate the natural world around them.

🎣 Did you know?

Under the Five Tribe Reciprocity Agreement, enrolled members of the Five Tribes can fish within the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, Muscogee (Creek), and Seminole Nation reservation boundaries using their tribal membership card—no Oklahoma state fishing license required.

If you are contacted by law enforcement and receive a citation for not having a state fishing license while fishing within reservation boundaries, assistance is available:

Today we got to talk to the kiddos at Lane Public School summer school program. They were excited to hear about what we do and especially to touch all the furs and learn about them.

This morning we got the opportunity to set up our a table of our skins and skulls at the Choctaw Nation Recycling Center here in Durant.

We were able to talk to summer schools groups from Durant Public Schools. We enjoyed answering questions and showing the kids all the different furs that we have. It’s always a great day to teach kids about wildlife conservation.

☀️ Summer has officially arrived in southeast Oklahoma, and with it comes soaring temperatures and high humidity.

Whether you’re fishing, hiking, working food plots, mowing, or simply enjoying time outdoors, take steps to stay safe in the heat:

💧 Drink plenty of water throughout the day
🧢 Wear light-colored, breathable clothing
🌳 Take breaks in the shade whenever possible
☀️ Avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day
⚠️ Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke

Don’t forget about your pets, too! Make sure they have access to fresh water and a cool place to escape the heat.

The outdoors are meant to be enjoyed, but a little preparation can go a long way toward keeping your summer adventures safe and enjoyable.

How are you staying cool this summer? Let us know in the comments! 👇

🦌 What would you do if you found a fawn lying alone in the woods or your backyard?

Your first instinct might be to help—but in most cases, the best thing you can do is leave it alone.

White-tailed deer fawns are often left by themselves for hours while their mothers forage nearby. Their spotted coat, lack of scent, and ability to remain still help keep them hidden from predators. While it may look abandoned, mom is usually watching from a distance and will return when it’s safe.

If you find a fawn:
✔️ Keep your distance
✔️ Keep pets away from the area
✔️ Avoid touching or moving it
✔️ Let the doe return to care for her young

A fawn’s best chance at survival is staying wild and staying where it belongs.
