A few moments from yesterday’s 9/11 Sky Steps Memorial Climb in Durango.

Twenty-five years later, we continue to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the firefighters, law enforcement officers, first responders and civilians whose lives were forever changed that day.

Yesterday, people from across our community and partner agencies came together to remember. In the midst of tragedy, 9/11 brought people together in ways we had never seen before. Twenty-five years later, that same spirit of unity is still felt.

Thank you to everyone who joined us, stood with us and took the time to remember.

Twenty-five years later, we remember.

Some of us remember exactly where we were when the first reports came in. Some of us were not yet born, or were too young to understand what was happening. But no matter when we came to know September 11, its impact became part of our history, our country and the fire service we know today.

We may not have been the ones who answered the calls in New York that morning, but we carry the responsibility to remember those who did.

We remember the 343 firefighters who never came home. We remember the civilians and first responders who lost their lives. We remember the families who were forever changed, and those who continue to live with the lasting effects of that day.

And we remember because the lessons, sacrifices and stories of September 11 continue to shape generations of firefighters.

From New York City to Durango, Colorado, we carry that legacy forward.

25 years later, we remember. We will never forget ♥️🕊️

HERMOSA SMOKE REPORT

Smoke and a small fire has been discovered on the ridgetop east of Trimble, likely caused by lightning.

USDA Forest Service - San Juan National Forest crews are on scene and reports that the fire is burning within the Missionary Ridge Fire scar and currently appears to have low spread potential.

Due to the current threat of lightning, firefighters are not being sent in at this time. Fire managers are working on a plan to staff the Freed Canyon Fire in the coming days once weather conditions allow.

📞 Please do not call 911 to report smoke from this fire at this time. Fire crews and dispatchers are aware of the situation and are monitoring the area.

As always, if you are experiencing an unrelated emergency or see an immediate threat to life or property, call 911.

🚒🏗️ We’re excited to continue building with a familiar partner! Monarch Iron has been part of Durango Fire & Rescue projects including Fire Stations 3 and 2, as well as our 9/11 memorial outside of Station 2. We’re grateful to have them back for Fire Station 4 in Three Springs.

There’s something special about working with partners who have helped build the spaces our crews have called home and who are now helping us create another station that will serve our growing community for years to come ❤️

Thank you, Monarch Iron, for your continued partnership, craftsmanship, and support of Durango Fire & Rescue. We’re excited to watch Station 4 take shape!

🤍🚒 August 24 is an important day for our Durango Fire & Rescue family and our community. Today, we remember Firefighter Nick Parks and Durango Police Officer Gale Emerson, who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the people of Durango.

On August 24, 1974, a deliberately set fire tore through the 800 block of Main Avenue, destroying six buildings and threatening the heart of downtown Durango. While working to evacuate residents and protect the community, Nick and Gale, both just 24 years old, were killed when a wall collapsed following an explosion.

More than five decades have passed, but their names remain part of the history of our community and those who have served it. We remember not only the day we lost them, but the courage, dedication, and selflessness they brought to their work and to the people they served.

Their legacy lives on through the families who continue to carry their memory, and through the firefighters, law enforcement officers, and first responders who answer the call today.

❤️ We extend our love to the Parks family and are grateful that they continue to be such a meaningful part of our DFR family. We are honored to remember Nick and the lasting legacy he left behind.

A special thank you to his daughter, Nicki, for sharing this beautiful collage of her dad. We are grateful for the opportunity to share it with our community and honor Nick through a moment that reminds us of the person behind the uniform.

🚒 Did you know our crews incorporate training into every shift?

During their 48 hours at the station, our crews make time to train, practice, and stay familiar with the equipment and strategies they may need when responding to an emergency. Of course, when the tones drop, the call always comes first.

A-Shift took our tower truck to the training grounds to practice aerial operations and working from the bucket. Training like this helps our crews stay comfortable with the apparatus, strengthen teamwork, and prepare for incidents where we may need to reach upper floors or help rescue people from a building. Training together gives our crews the opportunity to learn from one another, sharpen their skills, and stay ready for whatever call comes next. 🚒💪

Lightning-caused fire west of Durango, reported on Tuesday 8/11

Our crews were dispatched to a report of smoke west of town and located a small fire on Colorado Division of Wildlife property.

The fire was approximately 20 x 40 feet, smoldering in pine needles and oak brush. Crews were able to establish a fire line around the area and extinguish the fire. 🔥

Crews will return today to check the area and make sure there are no remaining hot spots.

⚡️ This fire was caused by a lightning strike. With dry conditions still present in parts of our area, please continue to use caution and report any new or concerning smoke or fire activity by calling 911.
