Happy Dark Sky Festival! While we celebrate the darkness and wonder of our night skies, here in the Foothills we’d also like to give a shout-out to the sun.

When it comes to the sun there can definitely be too much of a good thing, but this is necessary for life and inspires amazing plant and animal adaptations. For us humans, getting a bit of sun each day can enhance your mood, relieve stress, improve sleep, and produce Vitamin D! What’s your favorite way to enjoy sunshine?

Stop by the Foothills Visitor Center on Saturday morning at 10 am for a 10-minute talk to learn more about the sun. For more information about this and other Dark Sky Festival Activities, go to https://www.sequoiaparksconservancy.org/darkskyfestival.html

From Learn Your Land:
Fall is an excellent season to find wild mushrooms… as long as you know what to look for, where to look, and when to look. Pictured here is a brief list of some of the more frequently-collected edible species, ranging from gilled mushrooms, to boletes, to polypores… even to parasitic ascomycetes!

Some of these mushrooms are easily identified… others not so much. For more information on any one of these species (because one picture is never enough), I recommend consulting various field guides, spending quality time in the company of knowledgeable mushroom hunters, and joining your local mushroom club.

We have so many spots for this.

We have so many spots for this.

Cob meditation room built right into the side of the hill. ‘Living’ roof of grasses and earthen walls. This beauty is on our friends land, where it overlooks a beautiful river with giant granite boulders.
This spring, we’re hoping to play with some earthen building ourselves. We have some ideas for a circular well house using cob and maybe cordwood construction. Anyone have experience with natural building? We took a cob workshop a few years ago and fell in love with it. Mixing the clay, sand and straw to build with. So grounding and raw to build with those materials.
