When a great employee or volunteer suddenly stops performing, the biggest mistake a leader can make is assuming:

**“They just don’t care anymore.”**

High performers usually don’t become disengaged overnight.

Something changed.

Maybe they’re overwhelmed.
Maybe expectations became unclear.
Maybe they stopped feeling appreciated.
Maybe there’s conflict nobody knows about.
Maybe they’ve been carrying more than anyone realized.

Before you correct the performance, **get curious about the person.**

Have the conversation.

Try:

**“I’ve noticed you haven’t seemed like yourself lately. Is there something getting in the way that we need to talk about?”**

That one question can uncover what another warning, meeting, or performance conversation never will.

Great leadership isn’t ignoring accountability.

It’s understanding **what changed before deciding what’s wrong.**

Leaders: have you ever watched one of your BEST people suddenly start checking out? 👀

Growth is exciting.

New opportunities. New positions. New responsibilities. Bigger goals.

But for small businesses, growth can also create a question nobody talks about enough:

**How do we grow without losing what made this place special?**

The answer isn’t holding onto everything exactly as it was.

It’s making sure your **people grow with the business.**

Develop your leaders.
Communicate expectations.
Create better systems.
Give good people room to advance.
Protect the culture intentionally.

Because the goal isn’t just a bigger business.

It’s a stronger organization where the people who helped build it can look around and say, **“We grew—and this still feels like us.”**

When your people grow, your mission goes further. 💛

Small business owners: **what’s one thing about your culture you NEVER want to lose as you grow?**

“We’ve always done it this way.”

That sentence can feel harmless in a church—until the organization grows, the staff grows, and the people problems grow with it.

Here are **5 HR mistakes churches and ministries often make when old habits become the system:**

1. **No clear job descriptions** — Everyone helps with everything, but nobody knows exactly who owns what.

2. **Handling employee issues informally** — Conversations happen, but nothing gets documented.

3. **Promoting great people without leadership training** — Being good at the job doesn’t automatically teach someone how to manage people.

4. **Waiting until there’s a problem to create policies** — The handbook gets written after the situation you wish it had prevented.

5. **Treating HR like “corporate stuff”** — When really, good HR is about protecting your people, your leadership, and your mission.

Your church doesn’t have to become corporate.

But as the ministry grows, **the way you care for and manage the people carrying the mission has to grow too.**

Pastors and ministry leaders: which one made you say, **“Yep… that’s us”?** 👀

If you work in a nonprofit, you already know. 😂

One minute you’re focused on the mission.

The next minute you’re handling HR, coordinating volunteers, planning an event, answering emails, helping with social media, working on funding—and somehow becoming the person everybody calls when **anything** happens.

That’s the reality of nonprofit leadership:

**Big mission. Small team. A LOT of hats.**

And while wearing multiple hats may come with the territory, constantly carrying everything yourself shouldn’t.

As your organization grows, your **people systems, leadership support, and workplace structure need to grow with it.**

Because the people carrying the mission need support too. 💛

Nonprofit leaders, how many different hats are YOU wearing right now? 😂👇

There are moments in this work that stay with you.

Not because of the title someone had.
Not because of the company they worked for.
Not because of a policy, presentation, or training.

But because **something changed for a person.**

After years of working with employees, leaders, organizations, and communities, Coach Liz has learned that sometimes the biggest breakthrough begins when someone finally feels **heard, understood, and supported.**

That’s why this work has never been just about HR.

It’s about the person behind the problem.

The leader carrying more than anyone realizes.

The employee trying to find their voice.

The organization trying to do right by its people.

And those moments when someone walks away thinking:

**“Maybe there is a way forward.”**

Those are the stories you don’t forget. 💛

What’s one moment from your career that has stayed with you?

Nonprofit leaders… be honest. 😂

How many of these have you heard—or said?

“We’re a small team.”
“We’ll figure out HR later.”
“We’re like a family here.”
“We’ll just handle it internally.”

When you’re passionate about the mission, it’s easy to keep stretching the team, wearing multiple hats, and solving people problems as they happen.

Until one day, **the organization has grown—but the people systems haven’t grown with it.**

Your mission deserves strong programs.
Your community deserves your impact.
And your people deserve the structure, support, and leadership that helps them succeed.

You don’t have to become a huge organization before you start taking HR seriously.

Sometimes the best time to strengthen your people systems is **before you desperately need them.**

😂 Nonprofit leaders: **Which one have you said before?**

Ministry is about serving people.

But even the people called to lead, serve, encourage, and pour into others need someone in **their corner too.**

Pastors and ministry leaders carry more than most people ever see—people challenges, difficult decisions, conflict, expectations, growth, policies, volunteers, staff, and the responsibility of protecting the mission.

Sometimes one conversation with the right person can bring the clarity you’ve been trying to find alone.

At The Christopher Quinn Group, we believe supporting the people behind the ministry helps strengthen the ministry itself. 💛

**You take care of the calling. You don’t have to figure out every people problem alone.**

Pastors and ministry leaders: what’s one people challenge you wish you had more support navigating?

Everybody comes to the leader when something goes wrong.

The employee conflict.
The missed deadline.
The difficult decision.
The person who needs encouragement.
The problem nobody else wants to handle.

And good leaders show up.

But there’s a question we don’t ask nearly enough:

**Who does the leader go to?**

Leadership can be lonely when everyone expects you to have the answers.

Strong leaders need support too. They need a place to think out loud, ask questions, get perspective, and sometimes simply admit, **“I don’t know what to do with this one.”**

Needing support doesn’t make you less of a leader.

Sometimes it’s exactly what helps you become a better one. 💛

— Coach Liz

💬 Leaders, who do **you** talk to when you’re the one who needs guidance?

Leadership doesn’t have to feel like putting out fires all day.

There’s a big difference between **reacting to people problems** and building a workplace that prevents many of those problems in the first place.

BEFORE:
Miscommunication. Avoided conversations. Constant stress. Problems growing quietly in the background.

AFTER:
Clear expectations. Earlier conversations. Supported employees. Stronger accountability. More time to actually lead.

The goal isn’t a workplace with **zero problems.**

It’s a workplace with leaders, communication, and systems strong enough to **handle problems before they become crises.**

Which side feels more like your workplace right now: **BEFORE or AFTER?**

A title can tell people what position you hold.

But the way you make people feel tells them **what kind of leader you are.**

People remember the leader who listened when they needed to be heard. The one who gave credit. The one who corrected without humiliating. The one who believed in them before they fully believed in themselves.

Policies matter. Performance matters. Results matter.

But **people matter, too.**

Lead in a way that leaves people better than you found them. 💛

What do you remember most about the best leader you’ve ever had?
