The Story
Hello and welcome to SafeGuard! What could I have changed what happened, before it happened? This is a questions us veterans have been forced to ask ourselves following a su***de of a fellow veteran. What signs could we have spotted sooner? What actions could we have taken quicker? What words could we have spoken to change the outcome? These are the questions we commonly ask ourselves after our friends have committed su***de. How do we change from being reactive to proactive? The Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association 22-4 or CVMA 22-4 has an answer to that. SafeGuard is the answer to that.
Everyday approximately 22 veterans commit su***de. This number may change, but in reality even 1 veteran su***de is too many. According to the VA, 7 out of every 10 veterans su***des are in means of a firearm. Every veteran we know is protective. Whether thats of their family, their pets, or their home. We would never ask to disarm a veteran unless it was an absolute needed. Therefore, we are bringing the answer to the veteran. We believe that imagery is the solution.
With the SafeGuard program, CVMA 22-4 is networking with a very motivated partner in Boyz Hydrographic Imagery and Design to bring the solution to our fellow veterans. When a veteran comes to us and tells us they want to participate, we ask them what really grounds them in this moment. Is it your spouse? Your child? Your favorite pet? There is no wrong answer to this question. Every person has something that grounds them in the moment. Once we have that answer, we ask the veteran to provide us a picture of that image. We then take that image to BOYZ HID. What they do is the magic behind the solution, they apply the image directly to the veterans’ firearm. This can be on a handgun or a rifle. The firearm itself is not the important piece, the image that connects the veteran back to this life, this world, is what is important. Once that image is on the firearm and back to the veteran, this is when SafeGuard truly impacts and becomes the very last line of defense. In that moment, when they feel as though their world is closing in on them. When they feel there is no reason they should stay with us. That veteran will take one last look at the tool they decide to use. That is when that veteran will see the image they decided to put on their firearm. This will give the veteran a few vital seconds to remember what they fought for and what they bled and sacrificed for. In that moment, they will return to us. Us as in the CVMA 22-4, the family, their loved ones, and the society that cannot thank them enough for what they have been through and sacrificed.
The question is, where do we go from here? The answer is down. We MUST push these statistics down to zero. Will SafeGuard end this epidemic. We can only hope. But with SafeGuard it will add another line of defense for our beloved veterans. Any veteran can reach out to CVMA 22-4 or Boyz HID to begin the process. Remember YOU ARE NOT ALONE. We will fight these demons together. If you are not a veteran, but do know a veteran please let us know so we can make contact and let them know we are family. We will always be family.
