Doing laundry is part of everyday life, but taking care of your clothes dryer is important to the safety of your home. With a few simple steps, you can help prevent a dryer fire.

Dryer safety tips:
• Have your dryer installed and serviced by a qualified professional
• Never use a dryer without a lint filter
• Clean the lint filter before or after every load
• Remove lint that collects around the dryer drum
• Use rigid or flexible metal venting to allow proper airflow
• Make sure the exhaust vent is not blocked and the outdoor vent flap opens while the dryer is running
• Clean lint from the vent pipe at least once a year, or more often if clothes take longer to dry
• Keep dryers in good working condition
• Have gas dryers inspected to ensure gas lines and connections are intact and leak-free
• Use the correct plug and outlet and make sure the dryer is properly connected
• Follow manufacturer instructions and do not overload the dryer
• Turn the dryer off when leaving home or going to bed
• Keep the area around the dryer clear of items that can burn
• Check the outdoor vent flap during winter to ensure it is not blocked by snow
• Clothes exposed to flammable liquids like gasoline or paint thinner should be air-dried outdoors before washing and drying as usual

Don’t forget:
The leading cause of home clothes dryer fires is failure to clean the dryer.

Did you know oily cloths used with flammable or combustible liquids, like oil-based paints, stains, cleaners, and varnishes, can ignite on their own if not handled carefully?

As these oils dry, they release heat, and if that heat is trapped, it can start a fire. Vapors from flammable liquids such as gasoline, paint thinner, linseed oil, and lacquers can also ignite if exposed to flames or sparks.

The Duncan Fire Department wants you and your family to stay safe. Take a few simple steps: dry oily rags outside and keep them away from heat or sunlight.

Stay safe, Duncan!
