Despite putting up a hard fight, our DFD crew was no match for the mighty 3rd graders of Laura MacArthur Elementary School during their end-of-year Field Day tug-of-war competition!

The students brought the energy, determination, and teamworkโ€”and in the end, they pulled off the victory. We may have lost the battle, but we had an absolute blast helping celebrate the last days of school with such an incredible group of kids

On Friday, May 15, 2026 at 5:23 PM, Duluth Fire Department was dispatched to the 200 block of E Superior Street for a report of a possible structure fire. A passerby called 911 and reported seeing visible smoke coming from one of the windows of Greysolon Plaza. Firefighters from downtown headquarters and Lincoln Park were first on scene and worked to extinguish a fire in a unit on the eighth floor of the building. The fire stayed contained to the one apartment unit.

Firefighters from downtown, Lincoln Park, UMD, Lakeside, and Spirit Valley all responded to the incident. Eighth floor residents were temporarily evacuated for the duration of the incident response, but most were allowed to return to their apartments once safe to do so. One resident was transported by ambulance to an area hospital for smoke inhalation. No further information is available about that resident. One resident was displaced due to water damage and is being assisted by the American Red Cross at this time. No other injuries were reported.

The apartments affected by the incident sustained an estimated $70K in damage. The incident is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshalโ€™s office.

Superior Street was closed in the vicinity of the incident, but is now open to traffic.
Duluth Fire Department thanks its partners St. Louis County/911 dispatch, the American Red Cross, Mayo Clinic Ambulance, and Duluth Police Department for their assistance in the response.

05/15/2026

The Duluth Fire Department would like to remind everyone that the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for 54 counties in Minnesota due to extreme fire risk conditions.

Affected counties include Aitkin, Becker, Beltrami, Benton, Big Stone, Carlton, Cass, Chippewa, Chisago, Clay, Clearwater, Cook, Crow Wing, Douglas, Grant, Hubbard, Isanti, Itasca, Kanabec, Kandiyohi, Kittson, Koochiching, Lac Qui Parle, Lake, Lake Of The Woods, Lincoln, Lyon, Mahnomen, Marshall, McLeod, Meeker, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Norman, Otter Tail, Pennington, Pine, Polk, Polk, Pope, Red Lake, Redwood, Renville, Roseau, Sherburne, St. Louis, Stearns, Stevens, Swift, Todd, Traverse, Wilkin, Wright, and Yellow Medicine.

A Red Flag Warning means fires can spread quickly and grow out of control under the predicted weather conditions, including low relative humidity and high winds. Residents should not burn in counties where a Red Flag Warning is in effect and should also check any recent burning, they did to ensure the fire is completely out. The DNR will not issue or activate open burning permits for large vegetative debris burning and discourages campfires during the Red Flag Warning.

People should use caution when doing activities that can cause sparks or heat near vegetation by securing trailer chains, parking ATVs on gravel or pavement, and using chainsaws or other equipment outside of the Red Flag warning hours.
