The Duluth Fire Department is a modern day Firefighting force comprised of 132 uniformed firefighters and support staff, providing All Hazard Response, Prevention, Inspection and Emergency Management to the residents and vistors to the City of Duluth. We are strategically placed throughout the city limits with 8 stations. These stations are occupied and ready to respond 365 days a year, 24 hours a

day. The DFD is well trained in all aspects of a modern day professional Firefighting Force. We are ready to fight fire, respond to medical emergencies, car accidents, perform technical rescue, confined space, hazardous material incidents, fire prevention and investigations, and anything else we may encounter. The Building Safety Division has also joined the Fire Department to provide life safety through progressive building and housing code enforcement. 🚨 Fun Fact Friday 🚨

Ever wonder why Sparky the Fire Dog is a Dalmatian? 🐾🔥

Sparky was created in 1951 by NFPA and the Ad Council with one big goal: help teach kids about fire safety. At the time, children were being disproportionately hurt and killed in fires, so NFPA needed a friendly face that could make important safety messages easier to understand — and Sparky was born.

So why a Dalmatian? Dalmatians have a long history with the fire service, dating back to the days of horse-drawn fire engines. They were known for working well around horses, their distinctive spots made them easy to recognize, and they became closely tied to firehouses across the country.

More than 75 years later, Sparky is still helping generations of kids learn how to stay safe — proving sometimes the best fire safety teacher has four paws and a whole lot of spots. 🐶❤️

Auto extrication training is critical because vehicle crashes can present complex, time-sensitive rescue situations.

During training, firefighters practice techniques like lifting and stabilizing vehicles, rolling the dash, and removing doors to create safe access to trapped patients. These skills help crews work efficiently around damaged vehicles while protecting both the patient and rescuers.

Regular hands-on training builds confidence, improves teamwork, and prepares firefighters to make quick, safe decisions when real-world conditions are unpredictable.

Hazardous materials incidents require more than stopping the leak or spill — they also require making sure contaminants don’t travel with us.

Our HazMat Team recently conducted training with line decontamination.

The goal of decon is not to get the entrant perfectly clean; it is to limit contamination while removing PPE.

Training now means faster and more efficient response in the future.

Well…we can’t win them all.

The Duluth Fire Department took the field against the Duluth Police Department for our annual charity softball game and, unfortunately, DPD walked away with the bragging rights this year.

The good news? No pulled hamstrings, no emergency ice packs, and everyone made it back to work in one piece. At this point, we’re calling that a win. 😂

More importantly, the real winner was the Northern Lights Foundation, with our community coming together to raise money for a great cause.

Thanks to everyone who came out, cheered us on, supported the fundraiser, and reminded us that apparently fighting fires does not automatically translate to hitting softballs.

⚠️ Important Notes About the Game ⚠️

⚾️💙 IT’S GAME DAY! 💙⚾️

Tonight is the 17th Annual Northern Lights Foundation Charity Softball Game at Wade Stadium, and it’s going to be an AMAZING night at the ballpark! Doors open at 5pm and the first pitch is at 6pm.

👶 One-year-old Reggie and his family will throw the ceremonial first pitch, and local musician favorite Rafe Carlson will sing the National Anthem! 🎶

Bring the kids! We’ll have fun things to buy, games to play, and plenty of ways to enjoy the night while supporting local families facing childhood cancer. 💙

Kids 18 & under: FREE

Every year, we take time to test all of our fire hose to make sure it’s ready to perform when we need it most.

During annual hose testing, each section of hose is put under pressure and carefully checked for leaks, damage, or other signs of failure. Any hose that doesn’t meet the standard is either repaired or removed from service.

It may not be the most visible part of what we do, but routine testing and maintenance are an important part of being prepared.

[DULUTH, MN] On Tuesday, August 18, 2026 at 12:44 pm, Duluth Firefighters were able to see flames and smoke coming from the front side of a single-family housing structure located on the 200 block of Mesaba Avenue from their downtown headquarters location and were the first to report the fire to St. Louis County 911 dispatch.

Firefighters from Downtown Headquarters, Lincoln Park, UMD, Spirit Valley, and Lakeside stations responded to the incident.

Headquarters crews were first on scene where the structure was fully involved with fire coming from both levels of the front side of the home. Fire had reached the trees on the front of the property, as well. Shortly after firefighters arrived, the front porch of the structure collapsed. No entry to the structure was made due to unsafe conditions; firefighters attacked the flames from the exterior of the structure.

One firefighter suffered heat exhaustion during the firefight; the firefighter was treated on scene and is expected to make a full and rapid recovery. No other injuries were reported.

The vacant structure is a complete loss, but exact damage figures are not currently available. The incident is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal’s office.

Duluth Fire Department thanks its partners St. Louis County/911 dispatch, Minnesota Power, Mayo Clinic Ambulance, and Duluth Police Department for their assistance in the response.

Education is key at our car seat events. Our job is to make sure YOU feel confident. When you leave, we want you to feel comfortable moving harness straps, referencing the manual, removing the seat and re-installing the seat.
