This PAST weekend was all our youngest residents!

I started on Friday by visiting kindergartners on my lunch break. We held an impromptu
election to pick a book to read.

“The Day the Crayons Quit” was the winner! This new-to-me book was an excellent choice! As always, these kids had some great questions about the city and being mayor.

Saturday morning, I put on a Gorilla suit to support Project Joy Northland (projectjoynorthland.com) at the Going Bananas Run in Lincoln Park. Project Joy is a local organization that helps provide food for at risk kids. It was great to see over 900 people dressed like bananas through Lincoln Park to help our kids access nutritious food.

The weekend fun wrapped up with the Boat Club’s production of “Go Do Go”. It was a blast to open the show by reading to the audience.

I am so grateful to represent a community that values our youngest citizens and finds fun and unique ways to support their education, health and interest in the performing arts!

Tourism is one of Duluth’s strongest economic drivers. Each year, 6.7 million visitors generate more than $780 million in direct economic impact and support more than 6,800 jobs across hospitality, retail, recreation, and transportation.

Canal Park and the Lakewalk reflect Duluth’s ability to reimagine and create opportunity. Once a warehouse and industrial area, decades of public and private investment helped transform the waterfront into one of the city’s premier destinations. The result today is Duluth is one of Minnesota’s leading tourism destinations and has one of the highest visitor-to-resident ratios of any city in the state.

Our visitors are drawn not only to Canal Park, but also to conventions, concerts, sporting events, and Duluth’s unique access to Lake Superior, trails, parks, rivers, and outdoor recreation within an urban setting. Tourism strengthens our economy, supports local businesses and jobs, gives us national brand recognition, and helps showcase Duluth as a place people want to visit and more and more often want to call home.

Duluth Huskies Baseball season is officially underway! Fans were at The Wade last night to welcome the Huskies back to town. I had a great time throwing out the ceremonial first pitch.

This historic Duluth landmark was built in 1941 with over 380,000 recycled street bricks from Grand Avenue as a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project. It was renamed Wade Stadium in 1954 to honor Duluth Duke’s minor league owner Frank Wade.

The City of Duluth and the Duluth Huskies operate under a partnership where the city owns historic Wade Stadium, and the Huskies act as the primary tenants. They manage baseball operations while collaborating with the city on facility maintenance, renovations, and community programming. The Wade also hosts more than 140 games per season for the Denfeld Hunters and the St. Scholastica Saints and others

It was an honor to attend today’s Treatment Court graduation celebration.

Treatment Courts have served more than 1.5 million people and are widely recognized as one of the most successful justice system interventions. This program improves education, employment opportunities, housing and financial stability, promotes family reunification, reduces foster care placements, and increases the rate of addicted mothers delivering babies who are fully drug free.

Treatment Court consists of multidisciplinary teams; led by a Judge and include probation
officers, prosecutors, defense attorneys, law enforcement, treatment professionals, social
workers, peer recovery specialists, psychologists, and medical doctors. The Sixth Judicial District is home to eight different Treatment Courts who have been serving and supporting our communities for nearly 25 years.

We talk about streets all the time, but it’s critical we don’t forget the infrastructure we can’t see . . . like sewer and water lines.

There are roughly 31,200 total water service connections in the City of Duluth, and
approximately 10,700 of these are lead service lines and galvanized lines requiring
replacement.

Good news! This has been a City priority and by the end of 2026 we will be nearly 40%
complete with replacements. More than 4,000 lead service lines will have been replaced by the end of the 2026 construction season!

Duluth acted early and aggressively to take advantage of available state and federal funding.

The result is we’ve been able to replace lead service lines at no cost to homeowners, or City of Duluth taxpayers, while putting us well ahead of many communities across Minnesota.

This work is ongoing! Unsure if you have a lead service line in your home? Learn more by
visiting: https://duluthmn.gov/public-works-utilities/lead-water-education/lead-water/

The Legislature allocated an additional $15,000,000 in the 2026 session. We will continue to advocate for the state and federal funds needed to finish this critical effort.

Last Friday, the Minnesota Monsters hosted their first game in Duluth at Amsoil Arena against the Nashville Kats! I joined team captains before the start of the game for the coin toss.

Arena football is the fastest paced form of professional football in America. It’s an exciting game to watch and see the action up close. Entertainment is high!
A few weeks ago, I also had the opportunity to meet with owner Jake Lambert, the players, and team staff. I am impressed with their commitment to our community. They have supported fundraising initiatives and charities, worked with school kids and are looking for additional ways to make a positive impact in Duluth.

Congrats to the Monsters on your first home game! Their next one is on May 30th against The Kentucky Barrels.

Memorial Day is more than just a day off, or a holiday. It is the day that we set aside as a nation to both mourn and honor those who have died in service to our country.

This morning I joined the solemn ceremony at the Gary- New Duluth Memorial Park to honor the sacrifice of the veterans from Riverside, Smithville, Morgan Park, Gary-New Duluth, Fond du Lac and Oliver, WI.

Veterans from WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Iraq and Afghanistan were remembered. Retired
Brigadier General, and former 148th ANG Commanding Officer, Tim Cosalter, provided remarks. BG Cosalter is also a Gary-New Duluth native son.

Memorial Day traditions began after the Civil War as Decoration Day when flowers and wreaths were laid on the graves of fallen soldiers in remembrance. Our ceremonies remain largely unchanged some 160+ years later.

The latest episode of Welcome to Duluth! just dropped.

This month I sat down Duluth Police Officer Ryan Temple to talk about the Law Enforcement Torch Run coming up in just a couple of weeks, as well as the 2026 Special Olympics. The national event this year will be held in Minnesota, and Duluth is one of the few communities nationally to participate in the carrying the torch to the opening ceremonies.

Ryan and I cover a lot of ground during our conversation. One of the more fun, and I know popular! topics is the origin story of the Polar Plunge in Duluth. That one event alone has raised over $3,000,000 locally to support the Special Olympics and athletes from our area.

I invite you to come out on June 16th to cheer for the Special Olympic Athletes and our Law Enforcement Officers as they carry the Olympic Flame to City Hall for a special ceremony. The run will kick off on Park Point near the US Coast Guard Station at about 11am. Best cheering spots will be at the Waterfront Plaza in front of the e DECC and outside City Hall.

Details on ways you can get involved with the Special Olympics and the 2026 games are online at https://specialolympicsminnesota.org/

It’s a great conversation you won’t want to miss. Listen wherever you get your podcasts or watch the episode on YouTube at CityOfDuluthMN.

I had the opportunity to participate in lacrosse last weekend. A first for me! The Duluth Wolfpack hosted youth teams from across the state for a 28-game jamboree at the Arlington Sports Complex last weekend. I was proud to help kick off the games with the ceremonial faceoff. Exciting to see this growing sport continue to gain momentum in our community.

This is the first time the Wolfpack has been able to host a tournament in a single location.
Having all games at one complex is a major benefit for visiting teams and for families with multiple players.

This was made possible with the help and coordination of our Parks and Recreation team and the Arrowhead Youth Soccer Association (AYSA). Making athletic facilities work for multiple user groups is an important part of strategic reinvestment in our parks and recreation system.

This tournament showed how shared facilities can successfully support a variety of youth sports and future tournaments.

Duluth’s aviation sector is a major economic engine for our region, supporting more than 4,000 jobs and contributing an estimated $1.4 billion to Minnesota’s economy. From advanced manufacturing and military operations to aircraft maintenance and commercial air service, aviation continues to strengthen our local economy and connect our community to the world.

Companies like Cirrus Aircraft, the world’s leading manufacturer of piston aircraft. The Air National Guard’s 148th Fighter Wing is one of our top 10 largest employers, contributing more than $112 million annually to the regional economy. And the Duluth Airshow brings in tens of thousands of visitors every year for the largest airshow in the upper Midwest.

Duluth is also uniquely positioned with two airports serving different but equally important roles: Duluth International Airport provides commercial air service connecting our region to national markets, while Sky Harbor Airport supports private aviation and seaplane access along
the bay.

The continued growth of Duluth’s aviation industry also depends on a strong workforce pipeline. Lake Superior College is helping train the next generation of pilots, mechanics, and aviation professionals for careers that are in high demand and critical to the future of the industry.
