Fundholder Friday | Preface Project

Together with organizations like Preface, we all can combat childhood illiteracy! 📚👧🏻

“Our model is one that really tailors local solutions to meet local needs,” shared Preface Founder and Executive Director JT Wu.

“Having Gwinnett County students mentor Gwinnett County students within their own cluster is fantastic. It’s also fantastic when Gwinnett County students want to continue serving, and they can go work with and read with students across the country who share similar linguistic or demographic characteristics.”

Prior to joining the Gwinnett County Family Violence Task Force, Trina Bradford was one of those people who believed domestic violence was only physical violence.

“Part of the reason why domestic violence goes unreported is that there’s a misunderstanding as to what it is. Now my eyes have been opened to the different types of violence. It can also be emotional, verbal or financial,” said Trina.

Some in the community may also misunderstand why victims stay in an abusive relationship. Sometimes it’s because of financial burdens or because the victim doesn’t know where to turn. Sometimes it’s even because of a pet!

“Some people might think, ‘It’s just a pet.’ But [to a victim], that’s their family. That might be their safe space. They’ll stay [in an unsafe situation] just to make sure their pet is okay,” explained Heather Brooks, a board member and co-chair on the fundraising committee with Trina.

As one of the longest-standing task forces in Georgia, this nonprofit organization focuses on awareness, education and advocacy so that community members can accurately understand the varied needs of victims.

The Gwinnett County Family Violence Task Force advocates for victims to produce hope and nourish the “spirit of survivorship” in each victim.

“We are advocates for hope so victims can become survivors,” shared Trina Bradford, a board member with the Gwinnett County Family Violence Task Force.

The Task Force was established in 1992 and has been serving Gwinnett for over 30 years, meeting a growing need in the county.

“According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, family violence incidents statewide increased by 12% from 2023 to 2024.” said Heather Brooks, who serves as a board member and co-chair on the fundraising committee with Trina. She’s also worked in the victim services field for over 20 years.

“The Georgia Commission on Family Violence reports that Gwinnett County ranks in the 50th percentile for family violence incidents per capita. But research consistently shows that family violence is one of the most chronically under-reported crimes.”

As a victim advocate, Heather has seen firsthand the need for education regarding victim support.

Sometimes the biggest achievement in your day is saying "no." "No" to the thing that promised comfort but drove you down a dark hole.

Sometimes the biggest achievement in your day is saying "yes." "Yes" to getting out of bed, if only for a few hours, and knowing that just trying is enough.

This , we're celebrating the decisions that seem small on the outside but are big steps toward healing. 💙

We're also celebrating the counselors, therapists, providers, friends, family and communities who faithfully serve people struggling with addiction or their mental health.

We believe recovery is possible. And every day, each "yes" and "no" is bringing someone a step closer to that hope.

For decades as a financial advisor, Dave carefully curated his clients’ accounts to ensure they are sustainable and profitable.

As he matured as an advisor, he also encouraged his clients to consider their legacy. One way he’s helped them build a legacy is through philanthropy.

“[Advisors] can learn from organizations like the Community Foundation [for Northeast Georgia] who bring in experts,” he said. “These people who have been doing this for many years tell us things, and I think, ‘I never thought about it that way. I never knew to do that.’ And we learn to serve our clients better.”

Through resources and connections advisors find through CFNEG's Professional Advisors Network, they can refine their planning skills.

“Where the real leap occurs,” Dave said, “is when we begin to talk to them about creating their legacy.

“When you start talking to clients about these things, you don’t lose business. They’re ‘stickier’ and see you in a different way. They’re amazed that you’re talking to them about creating a legacy, and they’re excited.”
