It’s St. Louis County Sheriff’s K-9 Phoenix’s birthday! In honor of his big day, we figured it’d be good to share some photos that prove this high energy boy can be calm. Sometimes.
Sgt Ryan Smith describes his partner as six years young. Happy birthday Phoenix!

Nice work DPD and Fitz!

At approximately 2:45pm, Friday, May 22, officers observed a suspicious vehicle in the 500 block of West 8th Street. The two occupants were detained and the driver of the vehicle was identified as 45-year-old Dustin Daniels.
Daniels originally provided officers a false name and was showing signs of drug impairment. Officer Munger, who is a Drug Recognition Evaluator (DRE), investigated Daniels for DWI related to restricted controlled substances.
K9 Fitz was deployed for a drug sniff and alerted on the vehicle for the presence of illegal narcotics. During the search of the vehicle, officers located 105.49 grams of methamphetamines, 26.46 grams of crack/cocaine, 1.39 grams of fentanyl, and over $2,700 dollars in cash.
Daniels was lodged at the St. Louis County Jail for pending charges of 1st degree sales, giving a false name to a police officer, 4th degree DWI restricted controlled substance, and a Wisconsin Department of Corrections warrant.

Good team work between the officers and K9 Fitz!

Hermantown Police Department’s K9 Bruno has received donation of body armor

Hermantown Police Department, MN - K9 Bruno has received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Bruno’s vest was sponsored by Bill Karpuk of Plating Specialties, Madison Heights, MI and embroidered with the sentiment “Gifted by Plating Specialties- Madison Heights, MI”.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S. made, custom fitted, and National Institute of Justice (NIJ) certified. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 6,513 vests valued at $6.9 million to K9s in all 50 states, made possible by both private and corporate donations.

The program is open to U.S. dogs at least 20 months old and actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., accepts tax-deductible contributions in any amount, while a single donation of $1,050 will sponsor one vest. Each vest has a value of $1800.00, weighs an average of 4-5 lbs., and comes with a five-year warranty. For more information or to learn about volunteer opportunities, please call (508) 824-6978. Today’s the Day! Coming to Meet the Pack? (Or still considering it?) Here’s what to know before you go:
The event is free and fun for all ages! You’ll get to see about a dozen K-9 teams from around the region. There is no charge to watch the demonstrations, meet the dogs and enjoy the other activities.
But this is also a fundraiser. You can support local K-9 teams by purchasing raffle tickets (we have great prizes to give away). Plus there’s K-9 themed clothing and other merchandise to purchase, and we’re selling food/refreshments. We accept credit card or cash for payment.
What else to bring? A camera! Lots of opportunities to capture great memories with photos/video.
What not to bring? Leave your pets at home. (Yes, we get asked this every year.) This is our K-9s night to shine. No other animals allowed.
All the fun happens inside the Hibbing Memorial Building, so plenty of seating available.
The approximate schedule: doors open at 4:30 with opportunity to meet K-9 teams, tour law enforcement vehicles and other activities. K-9 demonstrations start around 5 p.m.
The raffle drawing takes place at 6:45.
Event ends at 7 p.m.

Questions? Post them in the comments and we’ll do our best to respond. We hope to see you this evening!
