🔥Stewart Trail Fire Update🔥
Size: estimated 100 ac | Containment: 0% | Location: 3 miles north of Two Harbors, MN

The Stewart Trail Fire was detected during the afternoon hours on Friday, May 15, 2026, near Lake County 3 and U.S. Highway 61 in Lake County, Minnesota, north of Two Harbors. The fire has grown to an estimated 100 acres and is 0% contained. Multiple local, state and federal agencies are responding to the Stewart Trail Fire, along with numerous aircraft capable of providing water and fire-retardant drops. A Reminder - If you fly, we can't! Please refrain from flying unauthorized drones near the Stewart Trail Fire.

A MNICS Type 3 Incident Management Team has been requested to assume management of the fire tomorrow, and will coordinate the continued response efforts.

Today: Firefighters are working to establish a containment line around the fire with handlines and heavy equipment, such as dozers, and are expected to remain engaged overnight as conditions permit.

Closures: Due to impacts from heavy smoke and firefighting resources, U.S. Highway 61 is closed at County Highway 2 in Two Harbors and at County Highway 106 (West Castle Danger Road) in Castle Danger, Minnesota.

Evacuations: Lake County has implemented the Ready, Set, Go notification plan. Current evacuation information can be referenced on the Lake County Fire Evacuation | Lake County Atlas Parcel Viewer - see full link in the comments.

Weather: A Red Flag Warning is in effect for Lake County, Minnesota, on Friday, May 15, 2026, until 9:00 p.m. Fire weather conditions are expected to remain at near-critical levels tomorrow due to low humidity, but wind speeds are forecast to be lower.

Please be careful out there 🙏

‼️Update. The National Weather Service has expanded the Red Flag across central and northern Minnesota. Additional counties include: Aitkin, Beltrami, Benton, Carlton, Cass, Crow Wing, Hubbard, Itasca, Kanabec, Koochiching, Lake Of The Woods, Meeker, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Pine, St. Louis, Stearns, Todd, and Wadena ‼️
Due to dry conditions, high winds, and low humidity, the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for today, May 14, for parts of northwest, west central, and southwest Minnesota.

While the Red Flag Warning is in effect:
❌Don’t burn brush and yard debris!
⚠️Be extra cautious with outdoor activities that could produce heat or a spark. Campfires are discouraged.
✔️Check ash piles from wood-burning stoves or heaters and any recent fire for lingering heat. Embers can stay hot for days, even months, and rekindle in Red Flag conditions. If you find heat, drown with water, stir, and repeat until it's out COLD.

‼️The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch for Friday, May 15, for most of central and northern Minnesota. Fire Weather Watches are evolving situations and can quickly progress to Red Flag conditions. Use caution and check conditions before burning.

Remember, only you can prevent wildfires!

Burning restrictions are in place for many counties. Check current fire danger and restrictions at www.mndnr.gov/burnrestrictions

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office would like to remind the public that we are now entering wildfire season in northern Minnesota. The conditions are becoming increasingly favorable for wildfires to develop and spread. It is crucial that everyone closely follows the Minnesota DNR fire restrictions. Additionally, when you do have a fire, it is important to never leave that fire unattended and to always have a method immediately available to extinguish it.

As the season progresses, Deputies will be responding to and investigating wildfires. If a fire is determined to have been set negligently or left unattended, citations may be issued.

Last night our fire department members responded to a fully involved structure fire where we spent hours of fire suppression and monitoring hot spots/ flare-ups overnight and throughout the day today. We had incredible support with interior attack, water supply, and overhaul from surrounding departments including Normanna Fire Department, Rice Lake Volunteer Fire Department, Lakewood Township Fire Department, Brimson Area Volunteer Fire Department, and 148th Air Guard Fire Department along with additional medical support from
Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service and logistics from St. Louis County Sheriff's Office - MN. We are very thankful for all the hard effort that was put in last night. All people and their furry companions were able to get out safely!

Happy Memorial Day Weekend, thank you to all who served!

Camp House Fire is being wrapped up and is now at 90% containment! Highway 44 is open as well up into Brimson.

As for fire conditions, Minnesota is still under burning restrictions with high fire risk in St. Louis County. This means no bonfires! Please check the DNR website for updates, burning permits are still required.

Enjoy the nice weather and have a fun and safe Memorial weekend 🌞
