Glow In the Dark Creature Workshop
Friday, June 5, 2:30 to 4:00 p.m., at Mount Royal.
For youth in grades 1 to 12. Jump into the future with Z Puppets Rosenschnoz from Minneapolis and make a glow in the dark animal puppet. If you were to travel through space and time, what creatures would you find? Tap into your imagination through the wonders of blacklight and create an amazing critter to take home with you. Z Puppets Rosenschnoz has donated this event and this activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund. The Every Child Ready Duluth Coalition is bringing early literacy to a different community location each month. Drop in anytime from 4:30-6:00pm to play and learn with your little ones, meet other families, and connect with community resources. Light snacks will be provided. Star Turtle with Z Puppet Theater
Thursday, June 4, 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., at West Duluth.
For grades K to 3. Join the dynamic duo of of Dagsi Turtle & Jisdu Wabbit for a screening of their video adventures to race through time and space on a musical quest to help Grandmother Turtle! Dagsi Turtle & Jisdu Wabbit will also be live in person to take viewers on this exuberant ride into Cherokee language and culture. This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the MN State Arts Board, thanks to legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Hawk Ridge’s Amazing Birds

For kids in grades 2 - 5. Learn about all the cool birds that live here year-round and those that fly through every fall and spring. Mac Barnett — National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature — is coming to town. Expect laughs, inspiration, and a whole new way of looking at picture books. The Old Copper Tradition in Central Minnesota
Monday, May 18, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., at Mount Royal.
Presented by Dan Wendt, Jasmine Koncur, Miriam Samuels-Schwartz, Mara Taft, and Ed Fleming of the Science Museum of Minnesota in partnership with the Northern Lakes Archeology Society. Learn about a recent analysis, conducted by researchers at the Science Museum of Minnesota, of copper tools and ornaments that were crafted by ancient indigenous people in this region. The findings from this analysis indicate that ancient people weren’t just skilled metalworkers, but that they were a highly adaptable people who maintained deep connections across the Great Plains during a period of intense environmental change.

Best suited for adults but all ages welcome. After over a decade of roasting coffee the Duluth Coffee Company decided to change it up and roast something a little sweeter! Join Duluth Coffee Company owner Eric Faust and chocolate maker Holly Vanderport as they take a deep dive into Duluth Coffee's new project; bean to bar chocolate. A wealth of information will be shared from where the cocoa beans come from to the science behind making chocolate, all while enjoying Duluth's only bean to bar chocolate.

For adults ages 55 and older. Learn about the Finnish exercise system that is catching on around the globe from local certified instructor Rachelle Johnson. We’ll talk briefly about the history and content of ASAHI and then practice it together. ASAHI is a gentle but effective exercise system that can be done seated or standing. Regular ASAHI practice will enhance your balance, strength, and flexibility. Group practice helps cultivate a sense of calm and belonging. Come and learn why ASAHI is spreading around the world. Bird Talk
Thursday, May 14, 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., at West Duluth.
Hawk Ridge Education Director Margie Menzies will present a laid back but informative introduction to birding. Learn about local birds and free technology to start identifying birds. Depending on the weather, this program will continue with a walk in the local neighborhood using the free Merlin™ App to help identify what we hear and see. “Wisdom From the Woods:” Meet the Author, Mark Langenfeld

Seed Bombs
Tuesday, May 5, 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the Main Library.
Seed bombs are small, handmade balls of clay, compost, and seeds. Often used in "guerilla gardening" to green-up neglected and/or blighted areas such as vacant or abandoned lots. Make some of these little bundles that are perfect to take out on a walk or to throw in your backyard.

Seeing Our Gardens through Wildlife Eyes: What They Need and Want to Prosper!
Wednesday, May 6, 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at Mount Royal.
Join Amy Westbrook with Northern Native Gardens, and learn how we can all improve the survival chances of insects and birds. Gardens that include 75% native plants and trees create habitat necessary for them to thrive and reproduce. The discussion and hand-outs will include plants, shrubs, and trees appropriate for the NE region, what plants give the biggest bang for the buck to bees, butterflies, moths, and birds. Hand-outs will include plant lists and local resources for purchasing plants and other supplies. Bring your ideas and enthusiasm.

There's still time to submit a creation for the Tiny Art Show! Paint, sketch, collage, stitch, glue, or emboss within a 4x4-inch area to fit into the show. Art drop-off is through tomorrow at the West Duluth and Mount Royal Branch Libraries, and through Saturday at the Main Library. The Tiny Art Show will be on display at all library locations throughout the month of May. 🎨

For ages 8 and up. Join Shelley Getten for poetry and printmaking art as she shares the challenges and joys of growing up on a Central Minnesota farm. As Getten reads from her book, Of Cows and Crows, she will discuss the creative writing process. Getten will also demonstrate block art printmaking so attendees can learn about making original relief art, as showcased in her book. Bookmarks will be shared with audience members to take home. Craft Supply Exchange

Join us for a FREE craft supply exchange at the Mount Royal Branch Library! Pick up some new to you, gently used craft supplies to revitalize your stock. Donations are not required to attend the exchange. If you donated supplies in advance, you may join us for early entry to the event from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. All items will be free, but please be mindful so that everyone has a chance to browse!

Art and Activism
Tuesday, April 28, 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Main Library.
Art has always been a form of resistance and activism. In this program, we will learn about the role art plays in activism and then make some art ourselves. We will talk about this year's One Book Northland selection, Where They Last Saw Her by Marcie Rendon and how Rendon uses fiction to bring awareness to missing and murdered Indigenous relatives. The library will provide art making materials, but you are more than welcome to bring your own.

Invasive Plants in my Neighborhood: A Study in Linocuts
Wednesday, April 22, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Mount Royal.
Local artist Monica Ihrke sets out to capture on paper the invasive plants closest to her. Ihrke uses relief-printed linoleum to depict beloved and vulnerable natural and industrial spaces. The artist’s goal is to familiarize people with local invasive plants in their backyard. During this gathering, participants will hear about her process and try printmaking themselves.
Monica Ihrke is a recipient of the 2025 Creative Individuals grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, and this activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

Pages and Pines: Where Books and Nature Come Together

Margi’s background in children’s theater brings her stories to life, from picture books to middle grade novels, and from historical fiction to fantasy. Margi’s presentations include visuals, the real stories behind the stories, a group storytelling activity, writing tips, and Q&A. Margi’s visits reinforce that we are all storytellers, and we all have a story to tell. Kids ages 7 and under must be with a caregiver. This program, sponsored by Arrowhead Library System, was funded in part or in whole with money from Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund (ACHF).

Read to a Dog with Gracie Mae!
Tuesday, April 21, 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Main Library.
For grades K-8. Practice reading aloud with Gracie Mae the dog. She loves to cuddle up and listen to kids read her their favorite stories. Each reader will sign up for a 10-minute reading slot when they arrive. Borrow a library book or bring your own!

Stories in Stone: Geology 101 (STEM for Kids)
Tuesday, April 21, 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Main Library.
For grades 2 to 5. STEM for Kids is a fun hands-on series focused on learning through discovery and play. This month we are learning about geology from a special guest, Minnesota State Park Naturalist Kristine Hiller, who will share her knowledge as you use investigative tools, rock samples, and more to make observations about igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks. Rock Painting
Thursday, April 23, 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. at West
For grades 2-5. Celebrate Earth Day with a fun, hands-on rock painting activity! We recommend wearing clothing that’s okay to get messy with (water soluble) paint. All supplies provided. Participants will take home one or more of their rock creations. Drop in any time between 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.
