At the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, the Heroes & Legends attraction honors the pioneers of America’s space program and the remarkable stories behind the people who helped make space exploration possible.

What Makes a Space Hero?
One of the most interesting ideas behind Heroes & Legends is that heroism is not simply about famous achievements.

The attraction identifies nine qualities associated with history-making astronauts: inspired, passionate, curious, tenacious, disciplined, confident, courageous, principled and selfless.

These qualities help explain why astronauts became such powerful symbols of exploration.

Curiosity encourages people to ask questions about the unknown.
Courage allows them to face danger.
Discipline prepares them for situations where mistakes can have serious consequences.

Tenacity helps them continue when a mission becomes difficult.
Selflessness reminds them that exploration is often about something larger than an individual.

Teamwork and trust allow astronauts and thousands of people on Earth to work toward a common goal.
In this way, the attraction asks visitors to think beyond the astronauts themselves. It encourages them to consider what heroism means in their own lives.

Remembering the Legends
The journey through Heroes & Legends ends in the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame, where American astronauts are remembered and honored. Visitors can use interactive displays to learn about individual inductees and explore their contributions to space exploration.

The Hall of Fame connects the stories of early Mercury astronauts with later generations of explorers, showing how one generation's achievements became the foundation for the next.

Superheroes: More Than Just Comic Book Characters!

How Superman started the the superhero genre.

The character's origin story has changed over the decades. In the original version, Superman was born on the doomed planet Krypton and sent to Earth as a baby. He was raised by the Kents in Smallville and eventually became Superman.

Interestingly, Superman wasn't an instant overnight creation. Siegel and Shuster spent years trying to get the character published before finally succeeding.

What does a conductor do?

Sets the tempo: The conductor establishes how fast or slow the music should be. Gives cues: Through hand movements, eye contact, or gestures, they tell musicians when to begin, stop, or enter.
Keeps everyone together: A conductor helps dozens of musicians stay synchronized and play as one group.
Shapes the sound: They guide musicians on dynamics—when music should be soft, loud, gentle, powerful, or dramatic.
Interprets the music: Conductors study the composer’s score and decide how the piece should be performed.
Watches the musicians: They listen and observe throughout the performance, making adjustments when needed.
Leads rehearsals: Before a concert, the conductor works with the musicians to practice difficult sections and improve the overall performance.

A simple way to think about it
The composer writes the music, the musicians play the music, and the conductor helps everyone perform it together with the intended timing, expression, and feeling.
