Crews responded to a smoke investigation this afternoon and discovered a confirmed wildland fire. Fortunately, a passerby was able to put water on the fire before crews arrived, helping keep it small and preventing further spread.

The fire was determined to have been caused by the improper disposal of burn pit materials.

As conditions continue to dry out and fire danger increases, please remember to properly extinguish all burn pit and fire materials before disposal:

πŸ’§ DROWN the ashes and coals with plenty of water
πŸͺ΅ STIR thoroughly to expose hidden heat
βœ‹ FEEL for any remaining warmth
πŸ” REPEAT until everything is cool to the touch

If it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave. Taking a few extra minutes can prevent a wildfire and protect our community. Stay vigilant and help keep Cedar Mountain safe. πŸš’πŸŒ²

With many new wildfires being reported across Utah, conditions remain favorable for rapid fire spread. If you are enjoying the outdoors, be responsible with fire use. Keep water and a shovel readily available, maintain constant supervision of your fire, and thoroughly extinguish it before leaving. Help us keep preventable wildfires from starting. πŸ”₯πŸš’πŸŒ²

As temperatures rise and fire season approaches, now is the time to make your property Firewise and harden your home against wildfire. Small actions taken today can make a major difference when embers and fire threaten your home.

πŸ”₯ Start with the Immediate Zone (0–5 feet from your home)
This is the most critical area to address. Science shows the home itself and the first 0–5 feet around it are the most vulnerable to embers. This area should be non-combustible whenever possible.

β€’ Clean roofs and gutters of leaves, pine needles, and debris
β€’ Repair loose shingles or roof tiles that could allow ember entry
β€’ Install 1/8” metal mesh screening on vents and under eaves
β€’ Repair damaged window screens and broken windows
β€’ Remove combustible materials like mulch, firewood, leaves, and flammable plants from around the home
β€’ Clear debris and stored materials from under decks and porches
β€’ Screen or box-in areas beneath decks and patios to prevent ember accumulation

🌲 Intermediate Zone (5–30 feet)
This zone focuses on reducing fire intensity and slowing fire spread through landscaping and spacing.

β€’ Keep grass and native vegetation mowed to 4 inches or less
β€’ Remove ladder fuels so fire cannot climb into tree canopies
β€’ Prune trees 6–10 feet from the ground when appropriate
β€’ Space tree crowns at least 18 feet apart, more on steeper slopes
β€’ Ensure mature trees are no closer than 10 feet to structures
β€’ Use driveways, walkways, patios, and rock landscaping as fuel breaks
β€’ Clear vegetation around propane tanks
β€’ Break up continuous vegetation with small clusters of shrubs and trees rather than dense coverage

πŸ”₯ Extended Zone (30–100+ feet)
The goal in this zone is to interrupt fire’s path and keep flames lower and less intense.

β€’ Remove dead trees, brush, and heavy ground litter
β€’ Remove small conifers growing beneath mature trees
β€’ Clear vegetation near sheds and outbuildings
β€’ Maintain spacing between tree canopies
β€’ Trees 30–60 feet from the home should have 12 feet between canopy tops
β€’ Trees 60–100 feet from the home should have 6 feet between canopy tops

Wildfires are already spreading quickly across the region, and preparation now can help protect your home, your family, and first responders. Creating defensible space is one of the most effective ways to improve your property’s chances of surviving a wildfire.

Dust mitigation begins this Thursday, May 14th! Please remember to drive slow and leave plenty of room between you and the application trucks. If possible, it would be a great day to stay off the wet roads. Have a great week!
