I am so excited!

Vallarta Supermarkets is looking to hire around 200 team members for their Duarte location, which is opening VERY, VERY SOON!! 🛒🎉

The City of Duarte has partnered with Vallarta to assist with the recruitment of these new team members, and we’ll be having weekly job fairs at the Duarte Community Center!

If you know someone who would make a great asset to the Vallarta team, have them follow the instructions on the flyer to apply and learn more.

This is a HUGE opportunity for our community, and I’m so excited to see this new business opening its doors in Duarte!

I want to thank my colleague, Councilmember Truong, for representing us today at the Contract Cities Fall Educational Summit, where he spoke on a panel about how multiple agencies can work together to address challenges in our communities.

The North San Gabriel River Working Group started in 2020 with the cities of Azusa, Irwindale, and Duarte, along with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, in response to multiple fires in the riverbed. I am proud to have been part of this group since 2022.

In 2024, we strengthened the working group by forming an MOU, and in 2025, the group mobilized and became even stronger when the EPA turned the area into a HHW sorting and staging site. This ultimately led to the formation of a JPA this year.

A big supporter of this group has been Senator Susan Rubio, who secured funding for us in 2024 and again this year for public safety efforts inside the riverbed.

Where there were once over 350 unhoused individuals living in the riverbed, we are now down to single digits. Our cities have made necessary efforts to conduct extra patrols and outreach operations in and around the riverbed, connecting individuals to health and housing services through weekly convoys with law enforcement partners, the SGV Care Team, and LA CADA.

We have also partnered with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Los Angeles District on several encampment cleanup projects to remove debris from the riverbanks, including shopping carts, campsite materials, abandoned vehicles, propane tanks, and gasoline cans.

This past month, we have seen an increase in fires in the southern parts of the riverbed. We have requested assistance from all of our partners to conduct cleanups in that area. At our last cleanup, over 4 tons of trash and debris were removed. As you can imagine, that takes a tremendous amount of resources.

This is why partnerships like the North San Gabriel River Working Group are so important. It takes multiple agencies working together to make a difference.

On June 18, in Koreatown, at a FIFA watch party, a gunman opened fire into the crowd enjoying the event. Luis Romero jumped into action and helped take down the gunman, resulting in him being shot in the thigh.

Mr. Romero has lived in Duarte for over 14 years, and it was an honor to present him with a plaque from the City of Duarte, along with certificates of recognition from Senator Susan Rubio, Assemblymember Blanca Rubio, and Supervisor Kathryn Barger.

We will never know how many lives were saved that day thanks to his quick and brave actions.

I also want to thank LAPD Deputy Zheng, who helped save Mr. Romero’s life by quickly applying a tourniquet to his leg.

69 years ago today, on a day just like this, the City of Duarte incorporated and officially became a city! 🎉

Today, we celebrate 69 years of memories, roots, traditions, and community. There’s something special about growing up in Duarte, watching it evolve, and being able to imagine growing old right here in our hometown.

And there’s so much to look forward to! From the long-awaited grocery store, to a new dog park, renovated Duarte Park, an expanded Teen Center, the new pickleball/futsal courts, the Donald and Bernice Watson Trail rehabilitation, and so much more on our Capital Improvement Program list, the future of Duarte is bright.

I want to invite everyone to join us for the Route 66 Parade, where we’ll celebrate the organizations, businesses, and community that make Duarte special. Then stick around for the Street Fest with food, music, games, and so much more!

Happy 69th Birthday, Duarte!

This year, the Duarte Kiwanis Club was honored to recognize Aida Torres as the recipient of our Community Angel Award.

Each year, Kiwanis recognizes an individual who has made a lasting impact on the Duarte community. While the event celebrates our Community Angel, it is also our biggest fundraiser, helping provide scholarships to Key Club members from Duarte High School, CSARTS and Mountain View, as well as DART members. Funds raised also support youth programs like DART and the Mayor’s Youth Council.

Aida has made an incredible impact on countless lives throughout more than 22 years of serving the Duarte community. It was especially meaningful to have so many of her former students in attendance, sharing stories about how Aida helped them write resumes, obtain their driver’s licenses, apply for college, and, most importantly, provided them with a safe space and someone who believed in them.

We also presented our Youth Service Award to Dr. Rachael Castañeda from Azusa Pacific University, who has worked alongside Aida to support our students. Two powerful women who have dedicated themselves to helping young people succeed.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended, donated, sponsored, and helped make this evening possible.
