This was the second year that our family had the honor of giving out the Lily Garcia Appreciation Scholarship. This year’s recipients truly inspired us:

Amy Benihyas shared an essay centered on courage and sacrifice. Her compassion, vision, and commitment to serving others are inspiring, and I have no doubt she will continue making a meaningful impact wherever she goes.

Lizi Gabriel wrote an incredibly inspiring essay about becoming part of the small percentage of Latino physicians. One line especially stood out to me: she wants to serve the community that raised her and carry her culture proudly into every room she enters.

Jordan Kakish shared how, in his culture, family and community always come first, and that helping others is something he carries with him every day. Those values of hard work, compassion, and service to others clearly shine through.

Oscar Rivera’s essay truly resonated with me personally. He shared the story of his mother fighting every day to keep food on the table for their family, and as someone raised by a hardworking mother myself, I deeply connected with his story.

I cannot wait to see you accomplish your goals.

I also had the opportunity to recognize the DART seniors, a program I am deeply passionate about and proud to be a product of. Thank you for the hundreds of hours you all dedicated to serving your community.

As a Kiwanis member, we also had the privilege of giving out scholarships to Natalia, Julianna, Ema, Fabian, Stephanie, Adrian, and Daniella. Congratulations to all of you!

Falcons, your community is proud of you. 🦅

It was also a pleasure seeing former classmate Dr. Magallanes, who after earning her doctorate and opening her own practice, came back to give back to the community that raised her. Dios te bendiga y te dé más!

And Mr. Javier, congratulations on your retirement. You have made an impact on hundreds of students in our community.

Today reminded me why I am prouder than ever to be a member of this community. 💙

This morning I had the privilege of joining Mayor Martin del Campo, the cities of Arcadia and Monrovia, along with the San Gabriel Valley Allied Veterans Council, for their annual Memorial Day service. It was a beautiful ceremony that allowed us to pause, reflect, and honor the brave men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice for the freedoms we enjoy today.

It was an honor to see and thank the family of Lance Corporal Francisco Martinez Flores, who attend this event every year. Thank you to the families of our fallen heroes, for they too have sacrificed so much in service to our nation. Their strength, resilience, and love will never be forgotten. 🇺🇸

A heartfelt thank you to our Senior Center volunteers for the incredible contributions you make toward the overall health and well-being of our community. Our seniors serve in so many capacities, from working the front desk, coaching softball, serving hot meals, leading programs, setting up the pickleball courts, and so much more. Your dedication, kindness, and willingness to give back make a lasting impact on our city every single day.

As a city, we truly could not do what we do without the support of our volunteers. Thank you for your time, energy, and heart in serving others.

Special thank you to Alexis and her team for putting together such a wonderful dinner and for all that you continue to do for our community.

Another great season, DYAC! ⚾️

Big Dawgz, I am incredibly proud of how you all played this season. From winning games with comeback victories, to pitching a no-hitter, and the way you constantly cheered each other on, it was inspiring to watch.

In life, just like in sports, there will be wins and losses, and each one teaches us something valuable. Keep supporting one another, keep working hard, and always keep your heads up!

To the coaches, parents, and volunteers, a sincere thank you for showing up for the youth in our community. The time, effort, and dedication that go into making this season possible truly make a difference. Great job, everyone! 👏🏽

I had the honor of joining and DUSD Board-member Holguin, at City of Hope’s Volunteer Recognition Event. It was an inspiring afternoon getting to interact with the volunteers, many of whom make long commutes just to give back and support families and patients.

Volunteers serve in a variety of roles, including wayfinding, inpatient units, infusion services, the blood donor center, spiritual care, research, and so much more. Their compassion and dedication truly make a difference in the lives of others.

The following Tuesday, we had the opportunity to invite Sharyn Godfrey and Jack Hunter to our council meeting, where they were recognized by the Duarte City Council for 20 years of volunteer service. 💙

To kick off Water Awareness Month, I had the opportunity to attend the 17th Annual Water Fest hosted by the Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District. The City of Duarte, along with community partners, water agencies, and districts from across the region, came together to provide interactive games, trivia, educational activities, and valuable resources for community members of all ages.

Thank you to Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District for your continued partnership, support, and commitment to water education and conservation throughout our communities. 💧

A great evening hearing from our Mayor and DUSD Board President on all that’s happening in our schools and what lies ahead. It’s inspiring to see the strong collaboration between our city and our school district. I love that we continue to uplift our youth and give them a platform to shine and showcase their talents.

Great job to everyone who made this event possible, and a big thank you to all the sponsors for your support!

It was an honor to attend City of Hope’s 50th Bone Marrow Transplant Reunion. Earlier in the day, we had the privilege of witnessing two patients meet their bone marrow donors for the very first time—an incredibly emotional and powerful moment.

To date, City of Hope has performed over 20,000 transplants, a testament to the life-saving work happening right here in our community. This remarkable program brings together doctors and researchers from around the world, all committed to advancing care and giving patients hope.

I am truly grateful for the opportunity to be part of this special day. Thank you to the administrative team for the invitation, and for your continued partnership and support of our city and our youth. As the largest employer in our community, City of Hope continues to make us proud through the life-saving treatment and innovation taking place every day. Thank you doctors, nurses, maintenance staff, kitchen staff, security, volunteers, and donors for being part of the magic!

Had the opportunity to visit our neighbors in Irwindale and join them in prayer for our nation, our community, our first responders, and the world. Grateful for moments like these that bring us together in unity and hope.

Thank you, Mayor Ortiz, for hosting this meaningful event, and to everyone who helped make it possible.
